Hello: I am looking for a new 2 meter handheld, I haven't had a new one in over 20 years my old YAESU is falling apart the plastic case is cracking in several places. I would like one that will sit in some kind of charging base on my desk, and I can pick up the handheld and go out the door. I know a lot of you guys are on 2 meters and could steer me in the right direction.

FT3D, it's dual band analog and C4FM.

It sometimes is difficult to figure out what someone wants. Open the link I provided in my previous post. There aren't that many different current hand held transceivers and pick one that may catch your fancy. Then go to the Review Section of Eham https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-category?id=49 and see what users say about them. It's a painless exercise and you get reviews from a wide variety of amateurs.

A somewhat confusing list with way too many older handsets.
You'll probably find it quite difficult finding a single band handset as most newer designs are dual band with general coverage receive too.
I didn't make my recommendation lightly, it's a great little set.
Look no further!
Regards.
JB.

I picked up a Baofeng UV5 new for about $25. Buy the programming cable and software. That way when you drop the radio in the lake or It falls out of your jeep you can buy another without much heartache and program the new one. The UI on the Baofengs is not intuitive but once you set it up its ok.

Hello: JB I would like to look at a FT3D hand held, I can't find a picture or info on the radio. Is this a YAESU product. I have a lot of YAESU equipment it might fit right in.
Thanks Everyone

Stay far away from the cheap Chinese offers. Many don't even meet FCC specs. They are disposal radios! Personally I only have Motorola commercial radios, but the Kenwood, ICOM and Yaesu make some nice radios.

I vote for Baofeng. There's no difference in audio quality between it and the big 3 manufacturers. They may not be spectrally pure, but nobody will hear it anyway.
You get the added benefit of something to use for target practice when you're bored of one.

You're probably looking at the review list. This is the current list of current hand helds on the market: https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/ht.htmlA somewhat confusing list with way too many older handsets.

Yep, that's the critter!
The FT2D is good too with similar specs, altho' a tad larger with a mono screen and no Bluetooth.
I'd also recommend the the Baofeng too as it's dirt cheap and I don't care about the FCC!
Seriously tho' it makes for a very cheap rig if you haven't got the $ to spare or a great backup rig if you want to get something more expensive.
The Kenwood one is a bit of a lump and don't know about anything from Icom.
Good luck on your search!
Regards.

And, if you like the retro military look, there's the BC-611:

I have a collection of HT's and it's a shame I never use them! The Baofeng's. For the price of a meager, yet gutwrenching family meal at McD's, you can get a new little toy. Dual band even. You can even listen to FM broadcast with it. You can use it as an emergency flashlight. Just for receiving purposes only, it's really a deal at the price point. I have several just as backups for the family for emergency use. I myself prefer "The Brick", IC-2AT.No bells and whistles, but nearly indestructible.
Good luck with your search.
