Perhaps a bit off topic and definitely not AM, but a very interesting explanation of how much can be done with inexpensive SDR radios. When I first attempted receiving Inmarsat birds, it involved semi-elaborate antennas and a preamp. Now, all you need is one of the $15 magnetic GPS type antennas and the software is free! My next project will be the Iridium birds.

Just started playing, for now only text messages. Many shipping traffic bulletins, notice to mariners about whale sightings and saw one iceberg warning. Using my ICOM 7100 I've copied the Brazilian pirate traffic using some of the transponders. I cant believe how many sats, that are  easy to copy, can be decoded. There is also a text service in the 137-138 band that monitors tracking company asset monitoring.
