It is with deep sadness, that I have to report that Joe-N3IBX has joined the ranks of the "Silent Keys".

To my understanding, he passed  away last night while in his Ham Shack downstairs.

I have no further information at this time, but if I get any updates, I will pass them along.

So sad! I counted Joe as one of my best friends. From the early '90 on we would hangout. Discussed all thing regarding old radio, old cars, music from the '20's, health issues that we were going thru at that time. Would give him a call when I had some time between service calls and I was nearby. Always a gracious host and would show me show me his "new" acquisitions from that week. A bunch of yrs ago we did a road trip and visited some of the AM ops up in the 1 and 2 land Carl being one them. We had a lot of good times together.
I was hoping to get a chance to visit but it didn't come to pass...

He use to say "I'm not cheap I just have deep pockets and short arms"

God speed my friend. Your going to be missed!

What a shame! Joe was a gracious host when I visited the Vortex, and just an overall nice guy. RIP.

Indeed sad news. I always enjoyed hearing Joe when he was on the air.  Always had a good  story to tell.

I’m very saddened to hear this.  Joe was too young.  I was at his vortex QTH by the Delaware River at least 3 times, twice when many hams including  2 separate groups from New England came down to Joe’s.  A couple of years ago he told me that he would eventually be in a wheelchair.  I had not heard him on the air for a long time and actually I was thinking the last couple weeks of writing him an email asking about him.  I was hoping he would put together a station on the first floor so he could easily operate.

The time we have left is rarely known, we need to make the most of it. Amazingly, a two quotes on this passed by me on television in the last day or so and darned if I can recover them now; Ben Franklin, The Bible, Thomas Aquinas?

God bless Joe and Jocelyn.

I couple of great pictures that Paul-W2JTD sent to me.  The group shot was taken by Ken-W2DTC and the picture of Dave-K3ZRF and Joe-N3IBX were taken by Paul's wife Lynn.  The picture of Joe and Frank, I believe was taken at either Howard County.

Its too bad about Joe! I used to talk with him quite a bit pre 2010 but have not heard him on very often in the past few years. He at some point apologized for some sort of speech impediment he was experiencing and I told him, no need to apologize as I didn't notice any thing wrong with the way he talked? Sometimes it sounded like he may have been short of breath but that's all I noticed?

Well anyhow his friend Mike W3SLK sent me an email saying like you, that we all lost a good friend, at least in this world, but we'll all meet up again in gods DX land...

RIP Joe

Wow!  This is a shock and surprise.   I'm not on 75 AM very much but N3IBX is in the log quite a few times over the years.   We traded quite a few emails when I needed help on projects.   Joe was always very knowledgeable and helpful.

Joe is younger than I am;  another ham that has left us way too soon.   It puts things into perspective.

“Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”  James 4:13-15

I just heard about Joe passing this morning on our Net.  Am so sorry to hear this awful news.  Although I never personally met Joe, I've spoken to him on the air many times.  He was an icon among the AM'ers of Ham Radio & will be missed.  And way too young too.
Joe, may you RIP.

Thoughts & prayers to Joe's family.

Very sorry to hear of Joe's passing, heard this morning listening on 3885 working on a basement project.
Joe gave me the 'Munchy Crunchy Vegetables' moniker when I got my General license.
I traded a Brieting reciever for a SX28 with him on a visit to his QTH along with K1BF in the early 2000s.

Yeah, Joe "Vortex Joe" was a real fine character. Always a fun QSO.

Visiting the Vortex QTH was always on my "bucket list", and he certainly told me to come on by!
Really sad that I won't get that chance.

Class A operator.

I think that a group of photos just cannot give you the true representation of being in the vortex.  My camera was vibrating at times and strained to pull away from its strap; Stephen Hawking may have been at a loss to characterize the phenomenon.  BUT here are some more pictures:

Just seeing this post this morning. Very sad news indeed.

I remember when Joe came up to my OM's place to help liquidate some equipment before the move. That's when he got the 809 rig and the Breting rx that Tom has in one of his pictures.
I took him up to the pole barn and chatted for a good 2-3 hours about life in general. The topic then came up of old tubes. I showed him a brand new UV-204a in the box, and his eyes just lit up! needless to say, he took that home as well.

Another REAL radio man gone.  Some have it in their DNA.   Joe certainly did.

He's a shoe-in for the AM Hall of Fame.

RIP Joe.

I did not know Joe, but I was taken back at all the lives he has touched, and all the gear he had.

It seems like the AM community is really taking hit after hit from all the silent keys. But what happens to all their gear? In a case of this thread, "Vortex Joe" really collected a great deal of gear. Maybe we should create a catagory on AM Fone related to this topic.

Would sure be sad if the collection went to the landfill. What about the case where someone "low balls" the surviving spouse? That is better than the landfill for sure, but what is optimum?

I love this picture of Joe with the zip wires overhead! Looks like control wires or wires to various speakers?

RIP Joe.

Joe was a real ham's ham, every visit to N3IBX was an experience. I would stop in when I was riding my motorcycle along the Delaware river. Joe would always have another interesting radio or two that got sucked into the Vortex and some stories to tell.

I remember the time we moved a Gates BC1-T transmitter from his overflowing garage down to the basement. It was amazing that we could stand it up after getting it down a full flight of stairs. I think there was only about half an inch to spare getting it upright. Ken took pictures of that feat.
