Making AM GREAT Again!

« on: September 03, 2018, 05:42:19 AM »

First off, my significant other / better half is amazing.  I don't deserve her, and she helps me with my hobby....  Carries transformers, has carried a 300 lb amp up two flights of stairs with me.  I love her!

This weekend, she finally let on what bothers her about the radio:  that 'white noise' in the background.  Like nails on a chalkboard.

So I looked at her and said:  you telling me I have to choose between white noise and wife noise?

Luckily, she smiled.  I'm gonna pay for it, I'm sure, but...  😏

...and just think about what the wives go through for the EME guys! Actually, do they have wives?

It isn't a spoken rule in my house, but when the door to the shack is open, I need to be wearing headphones. But, my wife too likes my hobby. I've put her to work as a second set of hands measuring antennas or winding coils. Another very important task is, "I'm trying something I just built. If you don't hear from me in 10 minutes, can you check on me?"

Explain to her that it's a genetic thing - seriously. Read an article that females cannot decipher voices or specific sounds when mixed with "noise" as well as males can. That explained all those times when I was doing some AM BCB DX'ing while driving. My wife would say, why are you listening to noise?

I don't think it is a gender thing at all. Anyone who did weak signal work amidst lots of noise develops the ability to filter out noise in their brain, sometimes better than a DSP! I recall years ago visiting Ozona Bob, W5PYT (sk). There he was with the SP-600 on the 13 khz bandwidth position, volume knob way up. Then he'd switch between antennas with a B&W 5 position coax switch. He heard just fine that way!

I remember as a Novice on 15m CW using an Halliscratchers S-40B receiver. That receiver was as broad as a barn door! That was all I knew, I did fine!

It's definitely genetic - here's an excerpt from the article:

"A study at the University of Sheffield and published in the journal NeuroImagefound differences in the way the male and female brains process voice sounds. Females typically process voice sounds in Wernicke’s area in the left cerebral hemisphere. Males tend to process male voice sounds in Wernicke’s area, but process female voice sounds in the auditory portion of the right hemisphere used for processing melody lines."

"Evolution has made women sensitive to high pitched noises while they sleep, so that they'll be roused by a crying baby. If you want to avoid waking her, speak in a lower register. However this sensitivity to high frequencies often makes it more difficult for women to decipher one voice from another in a crowd situation."
