So, here's the problem.... Wayne WA1SSJ built a (very amazingly beautiful) 24 FET transmitter.  Pics of the rig are forthcoming when Wayne finishes with the labels.

However, back to the point - we needed to test the rig.  Wayne brought the whole thing to my place, and I ran an exhaustive battery of verifications and tests on the RF deck and pulse width modulator.  Needless to say _everything_ performed flawlessly right out of the box.

However, the transmitter, built of course correctly by Wayne had a nice 240V plug on the end - and of course I have not matching 240 volt outlet.

Undaunted, the next best approach to the problem was brought to bear.  And here is the result.  Of course this definitely meets the N.E.C.  Grin  (and if you believe THAT one, I've got a bridge for sale over in NY).

The only problem I see it that it seems that the isolation bar of the left switch is reversed and should be mechanically linked to the right switch...The rest is ok  Grin

I always tape the clip leads so they won't come loose or short things out. Safety matters.

Ah, very observant  Wink  The right switch switches between 240V (up) and 120V (down).

The left switch selects between direct to the power source (up) and using the Variac (down).

I was at a fellow ham QTH last month. Same thing; 230v cheater cord with alligator clips to a power cord! I objected and he finally put insulation over the gators.

I dunno, Steve - even the QIX Memorial Clip Lead Museum has a ways to go to beat this guy.

Adds a whole new meaning to the phrase "I just threw this together on the bench"....

Some nice inductors in that pic.

I'm confused though.  Wouldn't it make more sense to hang the tubes in the window, rather than that huge inductor?

I mean, air cooling that inductor seems unnecessary.  The tubes, though.

At least he's got them mounted up high where the air is stale and at its hottest temp!

Radio Shack leads?

Those could have been used as a "soft start" circuit! ;-)

My version.

Feeding 126 into low tap, on 208.

Measuring off 5 of 20 caps, so quadruple the meter reading.

Then double it for the nominal 252 volts in summer.

7300 volts ought to really get a pair of 4x1s cooking!

But yeah, all the interconnects meet code!

Time to go buy another cutting board......  Err.....  Shelf! Yes, time to go buy another shelf!

There.  Multiplier isn't shown, but where I'm picking the voltage up is X8.

I'm Sure THIS meets code.  8.8 kv, through clip leads!

The wonders from Wally Mart.

I like the 'ease of sliding' hand hole in the shelf..... Its a much better application than the Batwings "works in a drawer".

It does look suspiciously like the center insulator of my 80m/40m "fan" dipole.

It's rated to 1kv.

I did fry the same model a week before.  Hit the variac switch and had 60 volts or so into the primary of a 4.4kv xformer.  So, about 2kv....

Thank gosh they are only 30 bucks!  Compare within 2 pct of my 600 dollar fluke.  And read to 200 uF and 30 mhz
