Have fun, Kevin.    I really like the Viking II.   It is well-built, and easy to work on.  Mine has been working without incident for almost 8 years.  Not too heavy, like the Collins 32V series.  I get a backache just looking at that one!

This is VK2 Number 2. Being kit built, its about time I got the assembly manual to see how he/she or it did..

Right now, I've got the osc sometimes working, but no grid current on the meter- so that's tonight's mystery.

the other VK2 developed a problem with rising plate current during modulation..... the long, long story for another time... but I picked up a 122 VFO with this 'new VK2' and married it to the other VK2, removing the Griefkit  HG10.   And a Miracle happened - no rising plate current, so I guess it wasn't a loading problem, but whatever it was, went away when I changed out the VFO.

I am using the HG-10 with my Viking II.  I had a similar problem early on.  I found the 100 pf coupling capacitor (C30) in the vfo was leaky, and it caused a positive bias on the grid of V6 (6AU6) in the Viker.  Replaced that cap and problem gone.   Maybe something to check on your Griefkit HG10?

yea, that would be something to check......  Its amazing how much time I can waste and not find the problem.......

I am using the VFO 122 with my Viking II-CDC. The only difference between the VII and the CDC version are some inductance increases in the OSC, Buffer, and Pi-Net.

For FWIW, here are my upgrades:

Weekend Update.

Returned unit to 'close to original', and gave it the smoke test. It kept all of it.

Other than disconnecting the original Switch to talk" handy hambone ckt. " the only thing I've done so far is to add a 5K, 5 Watt resistor in series with the Drive Pot and a few diodes across the meter.  Loading a 100W  light bulb returned a satisfying glow. No modulation, no mod current..... So I made a nice chicken pesto pasta meal (with ought the yardbird), and will return to the Johnson, maybe later tonight, definitely by tomorrow.

1st speech amp,  gain around 10, 2nd amp, nothing. No Plate voltage, crap, yes, the P.O.S. transformer is cold dead.

Maybe I'll rewind it as a 1 to 1.  Or not.
