Last week or so I have not been well. Perhaps a cold, but it seems I got mycoplasma type pneumonia due to it.

I went to the doctor Wednesday for that and it was apparently not enough, he said I have the flu -and- the pneumonia. I am contagious so the routine is a couple of antibiotics and flu medicine Tamiflu. No visitors and no going out to spread it.

The flu was caught early so ought to abate. Interestingly I had a flu shot but it was not very effective.

I can only say this is the worst I have ever been sick. alternating sweating fever and then chill so that in a coat and blanket and the room at 78 I feel freezing, and 20 minutes later sweating and hot. tired even though either just sitting or in bed, nose feels like I snorted a jalapeno. everything is sore. no real appetite. even my teeth hurt. I'm not complaining. This is the first time I have ever had the flu and it's a new experience.

I felt better today a couple times so the medicine is working and I'll just follow the doctor's orders and have total rest. should be able to sleep soon. - hah it keeps me up as well. The cats kindly sit near me and will go to bed when I do. Pets are a blessing of moral support.

I don't know where or from whom I got this. No one was sick, was not around children, no telling. Saw on the news the flu shot is not very effective this year so please everyone wash hands and avoid crowds,

Shades of 1930’s quarantines!
Yes, take care.  ‘This seems to be the year for rapid spread of all kinds of epizudi.
I’ve had serious flue twice in lifetime. Was semi-conscious and could do nothing for days. Tried to go back to work during a semi-better period but was laid low again for several more days.  Hope I never get it again.  Did get pneumonia immunization last fall though not sure if your strain is covered.

I and most of family, extended and all, now have really rotten hang-on colds gotten from holiday contact.  Endless coughing even through night, no sleep and bad dispositions.

Funny, after you get over stuff like this, you sort of just feel normal, not really appreciative for long to be alive .  I guess that makes it normal part of life as opposed to seriously debilitating or degenerative diseases.

Interestingly I had a flu shot but it was not very effective.

Glad you caught it early.  Appears it has hit around here also.  The problem with the flu shots not working is primarily due to the multiple strains of the flu virus and,  being a virus, its ability to mutate.  Also, the manufacturers [and others] have to basically make a SWAG on what it will look like before the season begins.  Sometimes they are right and sometimes wrong.

Like was said earlier, don't get dehydrated.

My wife took the flu shot last year, against my advice. 2 days later she was deathly ill, to the extent that her doctor almost put her in the hospital. She remained that way for about 6 weeks and sustained permanent damage to her air ways. 2 doctors and one pulmonary specialist told her, "Never take the flu shot again". This wasn't one of those stories someone shares, this was my wife!

Spoke to my GP and asked him to verify the procedure how they come up with flu vaccine. He confirmed, its an educated guess, with at best 20% success rate and its based on last years flu. I commented that it sounded like a money making scheme - he responded, "it is". I took the shot once and got really sick. Not since, 21 years later and never had the flu. No surprise, I heard on the news the other day, this years vaccine is only 10% effective!

Hope you make a speedy recovery!

Good to hear you are one of those people who stays home when sick. Some folks have a mission to get even with the frick'in world for getting them sick and try to spread it back.  They want to be heroes and go to work.

Recently there was a cashier at a local Stop and Shop who was hacking and complaining to her co-worker how sick she was... coughing on my food and spreading droplets in the air 3 feet away. I got very POed and walked over to the manager and told him to send that person home ASAP. He acted surprised like he didn't know - but then sent her home.

I agree with those here to avoid the flu vac. I got the vac every year for the last five years with no bad effects and no flu, but after researching it more, feel it is a bad risk to take on.

Of course, catching the flu can be deadly. My grandfather told me of his personal  story when in 1918 he was hired to go thru homes and load the bodies into the meat wagon here in the Hartford area. He said they were dropping like flies after the WWI return of infected soldiers.

It all about your own immunity. If you are healthy, even robustly tough, there are many, many diseases, viruses and bacteria that will not touch you. But get sick and into a weakened state and all bets are off.   Same for dogs and other animals. I have a new Springer and have become very leery of the effect that vaccinations, heartworm and parasite protection drugs can have on a dog.

The real reason we get old and our immunity system degrades is because our cells do not replicate perfectly each time we grow new ones. It's like making a Xerox copy of a copy of a copy, etc. Eventually our cells become more distorted from original. Just look at the face of a 5 year old and compare it to someone 100 years old. That is human cell reproduction in action.

I think some day people will look back at today's "drug" medicine and think of it like 1700's blood-letting.

The solution is probably already in use somewhere in the galaxy... a machine that scans a young person to map the perfect DNA and cell structure. As the person ages, the new scan is compared with the old and the cells get reprogramed - or something like that... :-)   We could hold onto our 2-letter calls forever.

Whoa! That Mycoplasma stuff is pernicious.

Can't say what will work for other people, but usually rather high doses of Vitamin C kicks the carp out of
most things flu-like that I start to get, or have gotten. I take ~4 grams per day minimum, body weight ~200lbs.
So that's 2 gr in the AM and 2gr in the PM. More body weight? More C. Your body will eliminate out the urine any
excess... no matter what, it's extremely unlikely to do any harm.

Space it 2hrs off other meds if possible... don't take within 4hrs of anything containing zinc (like "Cold-Eze").

Fyi, and Fwiw.

Feel better... and watch urself, get to the Urgent Care or ER should you start to raise fever or get mo' sicker...

Oh, and CRANK UP THE BIG RIG! Cheesy

Hang in there Patrick!   Don't push too hard.

-------

Influenza kills about 25,000 Americans in an average year.  Flu vaccines save lives, as proven through decades of studies and research.

Flu vaccines are NOT a money making scheme and they aren't trivially effective. Thousands of doctors, biologists, virologists, pharmacists and chemists work hard to produce them, and they aren't dishonest money grubbers.

Vaccines save lives!

lots of regular sleep and good diet is a good preventer of colds and flu. Keep your hands and face clean when around others or touching stuff others have touched as well.  I rarely get sick but as I'm getting older I find myself taking more precautions and preventative measures and see to it that my hands are always washed or carry hand sanitizer. I live with pain in my hands because they are so dry and cracked.  I work in an office environment with "heros" as JJ puts it who come to work to pollute everyone else lowering productivity even lower needlessly.  If I were an employer I would demand the sick stay home until they are no longer contagious. If you share stuff with other coworkers clean those items regularly. But can't say enough about regular good sleep and diet. Doesn't hurt to throw in a nap every once in a while too.

good luck and hope you're back on your feet ASAP.

My wife was headed to the ER yesterday. She injured her knee. Doc said go the ER, get an MRI. ER said, don't come. There is a seven hour wait and too many sick people. This is in Mountain View, CA.

CDC has a few graphs showing influenza prevalence and type for the whole country and by region. Click around. I noticed that out here in the far west, it's still gaining momentum. Texas and Florida show signs of leveling off, second derivative negative. It's mostly H3, not so much H1.

Four or five decades ago, as a young radio amateur, my friends and I used to laugh at the old buzzard hams who populated the various old buzzard nets on 75 meters, and seemingly spent hours describing their maladies and medical procedures.  Back then it seemed that there was an inordinate amount of attention given to the comparison of various laxatives and the intricacies of the lower intestinal system, as well as the daily results of same.
Now that most of us are headed toward the same ages as the buzzards of years gone by, it doesn't seem as funny now.
Stay healthy, lads.

Bob, RKW.

Corn Husker Lotion.  It's liquid magic for dry  cracked hands.

Pulling wire is horrendous on the hands.  The pvc chemicals dry them out, and the pull soap lube just exacerbated the problem.

Went back to my miracle cure.  Problem solved.  Started using it when my hands would be destroyed with petroleum products 'back in the day'.

My Dr. asked me a few weeks ago if I got the flu shot. I said no, I never do. Her reply was surprising to me. She said this year they got the formulation wrong, and the vaccine is at best 10% effective. This varies from year to year. She did however tell me that my Vitamin D level was below the normal range. I had been taking 5000iu 5 days a week when the RDA is 400iu. She said to do the 5K 7 days a week and retest in 3 months. Some literature says getting the Vit D level in the middle / high range of normal is effective and reduces the chance of contracting the flu.
Seems like this 61 year old white fat guy needs a lot of Vit D to get normal levels in Vit D test.

Pat, hope you feel better.

The annual flu vaccine development process begins several months before each flu season. In February, a global group of researchers meets at the World Health Organization to try and identify 2-3 strains of the influenza virus they think will infect folks in the northern hemisphere, based on what made people sick in the southern hemisphere’s most recent flu season. The trouble is, the makeup of the viruses can change in the blink of the eye, because virus strains constantly mutate. Although researchers have clues about what a virus did previously, they’re usually guessing what specific changes will happen next.

The CDC has stated that this produces a vaccine that is ~ 20% effective. This year they have already stated that is only 10% effective. In consideration of the problems it caused my wife last year, two doctors told my wife not to take it this year or ever again. Have not had the flu since the last time (and only time) I took it, more than 15 years ago.

3 years ago I was also told that my vitamin D level was down so the doc stated me on it. About 18 months later I developed some kidney stones, something I never had. Did some research and discovered that vitamin D increases your chances of developing stones by 2-3 times, which my doctor confirmed. HOWEVER, in diagnosing the kidney stones a CAT scan found an aneurysm which was easily corrected. He explained that they usually find such aneurysms in one of two ways - accidentally or during the autopsy! I guess I should not complain!

Flu vaccines are not developed by guess.  They aren't a profit racket.  Vaccines are typically inactive and cannot give someone the flu, though immune reactions are possible.

Even with a vaccine that may not be quite so well targeted, thousands of people who are vaccinated will have their lives saved this year!

Here is what he says about this years flu:

is this the 100 year flu when the vaccine made this year is a bust?
