I am forwarding this FWIW from PA0MER:
------------------------
First, happy xmas en good 2018!. Next issue, the US boatacnhorer  AM frequencies are outside our Europe region amateur  frequencies we may not use. We can hear you, but we may not transmit.... Our region is max 3800KC.  Maybe you have contacts, to see how we can solve this, maybe can US shift to 3705KC, the European boatancher f?Huh?  Hope Nick you have contacts to make this possible.

Thanks for the forward, and please pass along my "hartelijk groeten van n1BCG".

I've received quite a few emails from NL ops who were tuning in to the upper part of 75M where there's considerable AM activity in the U.S.

U.S. Extra Class amateurs can utilize the 3600-3700kc segment for phone (SSB & AM) which, I believe, is also part of the phone segment in IARU Region 1.

Now to work on that Extra rating...

Some of us have made many contacts with the European AMers on 3705 kHz since 2007.

I think the "boiled owls" AM net have met on 3705, early mornings for many years.
Perhaps they've been heard overseas.

Don't know anything about "boiled owls..." but there is a Northeast/Canadian group that is on 3705 many mornings
but usually after sunrise in the winter, so after 7:30 Eastern time. I've been known to drop by. WA1HLR has been making
an appearance there too.

But for DX, I think one would  need to be on around 1PM in the morning (eastern time) and definitely before sunrise,
as conditions now are... fwiw I hear DX from Europe just below 3800 late, almost every night on SSB.

Heard you too, Steve, on the other day... good signal too!

I've never heard any particular groups down there either, owls or otherwise.

Used to be quite a group down below 3730 Nick from the night they opened it up to fone in Dec 2006. Worked into Europe many times from the NC location. Activity dropped off in the past few years but I still get a Christmas card from Jean/F6AQK. There were times I worked him when he actually seemed loud!

Think I may have worked Martin once and almost worked Henk - too much noise that night.

IIRC, Jean said the group had to move up to 3710 due to interference from some German SSB ops. Guess some things are universal?

Will be curious to see what kind of signals are possible from the new location. Definitely have some tall trees, but its a RF-noisier environment than before.

FWIW, there were also a bunch of folks working European AM on 40m around 7160. Not sure if there's anyone still frequenting that part of the band from the AM crowd.

IIRC, the EU AM gang got on 3705 at about 0500Z or midnight ET. That would be 0600 local in western Europe.

Correct!
First we using 3705, but we got many troubles with SSB on 3703.
Therefore we moved to 3710 khz.
A pity we got again SSB stations on and close to the freq.

So we were going to the AM freq. (from Norway) 3660 khz!
First we had found a good and free freq. but....
You can guess... hi, hi.....

I did ask the UK AM Lovers if we may use their AM freq.: 3615 khz.
We got permission... hi, hi....
These freq. is during daytime often in use by UK AM stations.
We (F6AQK, 9H1ES, PE1MPH) are only early mornings, in the weekend, qrv.
But it looks like.... the ssb stations are follow us...

Hi, hi..... but early mornings I can say in AM hello to stations in France....
Therefore I transmit and listen on the AM freq. in France 3550 khz.
Yes I know it is in the CW part....

I think it shall be for us (AM Lovers) a big problem to find a good freq.
We are moving and moving to other freq. but always the same problem!

But if the conditions on 80 mtrs are better we can listen out on +/- 3885.
And we transmit on 3615 khz......

My first qso with the USA I did the same: I listen on 3885 but I transmit on 3705!

If you want, give us the most used AM freq. in the USA.
Mostly I listen between: 3875 - 3885 khz.
Those freq. are in my head and Memory Kenwood receiver. Cheesy

On 40 mtrs not many AM activity anymore.
Some times AM UK on 7140 and in France on 7160 khz during the late afternoon.

Oh by the way, another problem....
Often I hear digitale mode around 3870 khz....

I’ll give a listen and make some calls tonight/tomorrow morning around 0500Z on 3705 for EU or anyone else up at that time.  Home on Christmas break this week so can stay up late and play radio.  Had a nice chat with TimTron around 1200Z earlier this week on 3705 after CQing with the Dixie 40/VF-1.

Yes, working split is probably the best way to involve the most people.

Got on 3705 around 0030Z this morning.  Called CQ and worked WZ4B John down in Mooresville NC but otherwise no activity or stateside or from EU.  Listened to 3705 on a globaltuners receiver in Grenoble, France.  Lots of SSB activity on 3705 and also up and down frequency in EU.  Could not hear my CQs on AM.  Sent some CW CQs which got through to Grenoble but not exactly strapping around 0125Z on 3705.  Ran the ART-13 at about 150 Watts to the inverted vee.

Rick - I occasionally hear the Boiled Owls on 3725 kHz.  I think they get started around 4:20 to 4:30 a.m. ET.

Hello,
No 3705 is not a good place to be....
But I think there is nowhere a good/clean AM freq. in Europe.

Just we were on 3615 khz, but evenso ssb there...
And conditions are very poor on 80 meters.
Jean, F6AQK, got only S 8 by me. Normaly he is in the 'red zone'.
Fortunato, 9H1ES, I do not hear him speaking... only I a weak carrier.
I remember he did have somedays S5-6 by me.

If you want to use a webreceiver in Europe: http://www.160m.net/
But no 3885 aboard... hi, hi...

Oh by the way, may/can you in the USA transmit on 3615?

And I think we must wait for better conditions... Wink
