I remember the FCC assigned calls, the one at my friend's dad's TV dealership and repair shop where I was a shop rat was KKD5484. They had a Regency base unit that had full carrier AM and  DSB mode, I distinctly remember it did not have LSB or USB modes.

During the CB boom of the mid 70s I recall that the FCC didn't issue call signs, you were supposed to make one up from your initials and IIRC digits from your zip code. Am I remembering that right?  I still have the Pace 144 that  I picked up at Railroad Salvage in Groton, CT back then.  They were the place to go to for CB radios around here then and up in the Worcester area, "where Spag's is next to us".

There's still a local CB group in the Westerly area,  they all seem to have the same roof mounted base loaded 5/8 wave whip antennas on their vehicles and hang out at the local Cumberland Farms.

Making AM GREAT Again!

That was your temporary call sign.  Once you put your application in the mail, you could use the temp one.

My grandfather was KTK0681 OR 0881.  It was 0881 as I grew up, and the 0681call came into being as dementia set in.

So, he had both.  ☺️

IIRC original call format was "FCC District #", a letter, and 4 numbers.  Remember that we had 18Q3379 as an assigned call.  That lasted a little while, but what with the status of that sunspot cycle they were soon forgotten about.  Considering I used to keep reliable schedules on 6 M AM with Florida from Indiana, 11 M must have been open most of the time.
