Hi all, could not find an answer to this anywhere so here I go.
I have a Valiant I am rebuilding.  I noticed that my Valiant does not have the light bulb or socket for the left indicator light (looking from front).  The one I see in videos and pictures as a power on light I suppose.  There doesn't seem to have ever been a light there, just the jewel lens in red.  In the Valiant construction manual (I have 1956) it is not shown, talked about, nor are the parts for it in the parts list.  Is this something people just add on? Or do I have an odd ball?

The Viking 2 used a 110 Volt cs6 screw in bulb for power and hV on.... also known as candelebra or festival lights

the Ranger used a bayonnett socket for common pilot lights like #47 (6.3V)

most folks are replacing with leds and led replacements ... can look good if you get the color right

This has the screw in 6S6 bulb for the plate, and 2 bayonet #51 for the dial lights. My concern is there is another jewel lense on the left, identical to the plate jewel on the right, except the second jewel lense has no light or socket for it, doesn't look like it ever did, so I'm wondering if that second light is an add on?

yes ... I believe they were the same .... those 6s6 bulbs came in quite wide voltage range ... you can bet most replacers didnt know or care ... so you see
overheated crumbling sockets in old gear...

I would get rid of them

The second jewel was a dummy. There was not a lamp behind it.

Definitely a power indicator, and while I've never seen a Valiant without a 6.3V bulb there, I don't see it on the schematics.

Looked at the picture,  don't think you need a TVI filter on a light bulb

:-)

No you don't, but that was the thinking back in the 1950s.

And, not many hams these days wear jackets and ties and smoke pipes when they operate!

The left jewel lamp......not the VFO internal lamp....for some reason was not installed at the factory or in the kits.
Some of the left jewels were green...and in my opinion, should be instead of red.

I added a lamp holder and wired it to the adjacent VFO internal lamp.
This make a nice power on indicator that should have been included with all the Johnson transmitters.

I have (2) Johnson 500 transmitters, a Ranger and a factory assembled Valiant.
I wired them all as above.
The Valiant has a green jewel from the factory.
