GM Group:

I have a Viking 1 that has many internal upgrades and mods but works very well and the front panel is about an 8-9 condition.  The cabinet, however is a poorly overpainted mess.

I want to re-finish the cabinet--what was the original color and finish for these?  I have seen the maroon used by Johnson but never have seen a color picture of an original Viking 1.

Thanks,

Curt

Thanks Steffen...great pictures.   It looks like that one was a rack-mounted version?  Mine has no rack handles and only the three rack mount crews on each side--none across the top.

I didn't see any pix of a cabinet.  The cabinet color is what I really need.  I have only seen one good color picture of a restoration of the rounded front edge cabinet that was the Maroon but wonder if that was the original Viking 1 color or not.

Thanks

Hi Kurt.....my Viking 1 came in a cabinet that was about the same color as the meter bezel and knobs.

The go to guy is Chuck, K1TLI.  http://www.johnsonradioresto.com/  He restores EFJ to original stock.  He does beautiful work.  He can probably give you all the info you need on the cabinet paint (as compared with the front panel)

For one thing, the cabinet uses crinkle finish as opposed to semi-gloss

Don't know if I've ever seen one stock w/rack handles, methinks it was added on by the owner. If you see a VkI screws along the top of the front panel it's because someone added some shielding to the transmitter. Back when these rigs came out TV's had 21 mc video IF stages.
Plasticote and Duplacolor (sp) auto touch up paint had rattle cans w/a pretty good color match for the cabinet but isn't wrinkle. Both where for GM cars. Repainted mine back in the '90s.
Good old solid tx.

Are we talking about a V1 with it's cabinet or a V1 without a cabinet?  The V1 without a cabinet can have handles installed which will fit nicely in a rack.  I have one of those which has been TVI modified.  I can see installing handles but will not do so

Hey Al,
Looks like somewhere in the world there's a Viking II missing a bottom cover.
My old timer is a table top model w/the ubiquitous 829B/3B39 in the final. They
where still way cheaper that the 4D32's in the early '90s when I got it. I'm pretty
sure I used the Plasticoat auto paint on it.

Terry

What a handsome xmtr!  I remember when I was a kid, I lusted after it but had to make the hard decision between college and a Viking 1 - college won out.  I picked this unit up  a few years ago at a fester.   It works fine - it has a 4D32 in the final.  I have 1/2 dozen spares as I also have a 32V1.

Thanks for the nice picture.  Hope the original poster got the info he wanted. Isn't it great reminiscing?

Here is the beast on my current vintage desk.  Meisner EX doing duty as the VFO.  Ran this in the recent Novice Rig Roundup.
