I use the chokes, but I make my own. They will keep RF out of the shack, but I've never seen any reduction in the received noise level. I've compared slipping multiple "beads" over the coax against winding 4-6 turns of RG-142 through a torroid core. The torroid ciore is much more effective, easier to make and less $$.

K9YC has a very comprehensive tutorial on common mode chokes, among other things, with some nice cookbook solutions as well.  You can build your own, usually better than what you can buy.

I totally agree - this paper should be the "bible" on such chokes.
