I was listening to 40M, 7290. What channel is that?? I was going to turn on the little linear for 125 Watts of AM and the nice QSO started getting bombarded with carrier. Someone broke in and said "the frequency is in use". Then the slightly off frequency carrier came back. Then another AM station started calling CQ and an SSB station decided to start chatting.
The other stations REALLY can not hear the ongoing QSO??

You're confused, Fred. Channels are used for TV and CB, not 40m amateur service.  Wink

As to other AM stations interfering, it happens frequently on 40m due to the characteristics of the band. Quite often two loud stations really can't hear each other even though you can hear both. That's not to say there aren't cases of intentional interference, simply that 40m has some interesting conditions at times, most days, etc.
