Just got my 40 meter antenna back up after probably a year.

Fired up the 16 FET class E rig on 40 - WOW!!! Strapping sigs, NO foreign broadcast interference (at least when I was on which was around 10:00PM).

Is 40 usually this good at night?  Are the foreign BC stations pretty much gone from the band?  I was up at the usual AM area - around 7290 +/- 5kHz.

I was very pleasantly surprised.  Probably be on tonight...

Regards,  Steve

Steve

As Tim Kc9QJE and I mentioned the last 2 evening we caught you on 40, you have had have a great signal to my location

YES 40 is usually really good, barrowing any sunspot  / solar upsets

Hope you enjoyed the audio grab the other day

and I'll be around this evening on 40 as usual

Yes, forty has always been good at night. You do need to pick the times and frequency to avoid the furrin' broadcash stuff (just for you VW). But it's worth the effort in my opinion. I learned this from W8VYZ and W5PYT back in the 1970s.

I enjoy listening to the Brits talking with each other late in our night or our very early morning, their daytime scatter on 40.  You don't have all the  "slam bam, thank you  ma...59, GLITC " chatter, just cool accents talking about the Royal Family being wonderful, a pain, a drain, and the number one gripe, " those yanks think it's DisneyLand over here."

Fun times on Jersey Isle, I'll  bet,  having four way qso's , Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.  Miss any?  Grin

I'll be monitoring 7.290 AM tonight after broadcast goes away.  China Radio Intl. is blasting in here  40 over, currently teaching Chinese to English.

Was working Ron, and shortly there after the band took a dump,

40 has been pretty stable lately until tonight, it may just be a good night for longer paths..

Rich, I heard ya in and out of there along with John (forget the call) later on.  Unfortunately, I was on my 706 with no filtering and mods so unless someone is strapping real good like Ron was here, I just get too many signals for the rig to process.

I just worked WA3GPE in Altoona, PA on 7.295 AM with my barefoot IC-706.  He reported me at 20 over.  He was coming in 60 over until some broadcast splatter came in.

It was great talking to everyone tonight. Band was in good shape from Texas, copied all at 20 over. Good to QSO with you guys under such pleasurable conditions. Larry and Glenn, thanks for helping me dial in the EQ on the Valiant. Timtron mods give great lows and sound great for local rag chews, but adding some more highs did the trick for good long distance communication.

Steve, we are all awaiting an update on your 4-FET class E rig for 40, and I hope all you guys working on these things will give us some schematics and building tips once you have all the bugs worked out. Your 16-FET rig sounded beautiful tonight.

Doug

This 706 without any filters is working better than I thought on AM with my crappy antenna.  If I can hear them, I can pretty much work 'em.  Unfortunately, I don't always hear too well.

Anyway, just had my 2nd AM contact a couple minutes ago.  This time with Bill W2WLD on 7.295.

I'm getting the AM bug bad, can't wait to move to my land and setup real antennas.

edit: and now I just talked to WA1HLR and K1ETP on 7.275 - there was someone else in there but the noise is bad here.

Steve, I heard you in Arizona on 40 a couple nights ago (I guess that's the day you were talking about).  It wasn't a booming signal but I could totally copy you.

I fired everything up and was going to make an attempt to get into the roundtable, but I couldn't hear the other people.  It's very possible you couldn't have heard me anyway.

So, we fired up a QSO on this side 2 Kc down.
