The Glow of Wood and Radios

« on: February 18, 2015, 07:45:52 AM »

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (February 18, 1745 – March 5, 1827) was an Italian physicist credited with the invention of the first electrical battery, the Voltaic pile which he invented in 1799. With this invention Volta proved that electricity could be generated chemically and debased the prevalent theory that electricity was generated solely by living beings.  Grin  All good however I want to know more about how generate electricity "by living beings"??  Just getting a little punchy up here in the Boston area with all the snow!  Wink Can't wait until the snow melts and I can go bicycle mobile again..

One way to generate electricity is to harness the methane gas that is emitted by living beings.  I'm not going to share any images that brings this method to mind   Grin

A simplified explanation of how organisms create electrical charges to drive biological processes, is they break the bonds of chemical compounds and separate the ions by moving them across membranes/barriers.

This yields the equivalent of a battery with positive ions on one side and negative ions on the other side of the membrane/barrier.

The energy to drive the reduction process is obtained from external sources such as light (for photosynthesis), methane, sugars, hydrocarbons, sulphur compounds or heat (such as from geothermal sources) found in the environment, among others.

You guys have been having and awful winter, my sister in Kingston, MA sent me some pictures of Valentines Day Weekend in New England. Her husband has missed a lot of work, he rides the T to Cambridge for work. I'll gladly trade some of our warm and dry weather for some of that snow in the form of rain.

The front of my sister's house last weekend, front of my house last weekend.

The power solution is just a matter of taking the blue pill:

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

If you experience a power surge lasting longer than 4 hours............ take another one! Grin
