   "  Gates BC1G 1000 Watt AM Broadcast Transmitter   "

Now, listen to this and I'll tell you 'bout the Gates
I'll tell you 'bout the big Gates  Radio
I'll tell you 'bout the hopeless night
Wandering the Wigmans dream
Tell you 'bout the maiden with wrought iron soul

Please, someone take this thing. I'm considering putting wheels on it and towing it home.
Someone, end this madness! Do it for the less fortunate. I can't take it anymore.

Sooooooo klc
you are requesting someone to take a Gates BC1G off your hands or watt??
OR are you fighting your sub conscience to pick one up, if you can put wheels on it??

Please clarify your dilemma.

Simple.

KLC - get the rig. If after a while you don't like it then I'll come take it off your hands. A nice thing about those is the space inside making easier modifications.

I knew a YL that had a typesetting machine in her garage. It used 35MM-like film with the text characters on it, and exposed chemical images onto paper one character at a time to make the page. Pictures, if any were "paste up" afterwards. The machine was the size of a Volkswagen. This was well before desktop publishing and WYSIWYG existed.

F,

Yes, I'm 'fighting  my  sub conscience '.  I could get away with a beastely 610 by moving it in piece by piece. I picked up a low power homebrew rig in a 19" X 48 and that fit in the shack in pieces. That's the thing.... it becomes part of the scenery.

I've just been able to fit my car in the garage after living here for almost 7 years.....  The wife would go nuts if that BC1G appeared. (It took several years to get rid of her printing press, and she would go bonkers.)

I remember a song by Lou Reed...."Take A Walk On The Wild Side"
The XYL will get over it  OR the bed will be moved to the garage and you can sleep with your second wife/The Gates. Shooot go get it.
My wife calls my ham shack my first wife and she is my second wife. Cuz I married her AFTER my first marriage to Electronics/Ham radio...

Similar story Fred.
My prized possessions when my future wife first met me were called by her, " baby car (MG), baby telescope (unitron 4" 160), baby Guitar (acoustic), and the Christmas Tree" (all my electronics stacked vertically for lack of space in dorm room and later a small apartment.)

Only the Christmas Tree existed in college, remaining came after Birdwell Div. of SSC/Rayethon at NTS, Nevada paychecks.  Ah, those were the days. 48 hrs on, 48 off , 90 miles NW of Vegas. Trailer camp at NTS, well site 3, apartment for three bachelors in Vegas.
Work there was downhole electronic and nuclear survey of test holes, slant holes and shot holes ranging in size from 9 in. To 166 in. Dia, and up to 3000 or so ft. Deep.

Digressing in nostalgia ...
So After marriage, they all kept their names until kids came along ( real babies.)

She helped me learn the code, flash card, tape and whistle style. At the 5wpm mark she knew it as well as I, but alas no further interest.

You seem to have a very understanding Wiffin. Better pick up the Gates, --regrets only if you don't.  Grin

Current bid is 299.  That's a lot of xmtr for 300 bucks.  It comes with spare tubes and some other parts.

Garage can be cold this time of year. Dogs and cats can help warm things up, just let 'em all sleep on top of the covers.

The price isn't bad, but consider the burns on the PC boards requiring some rework and also the suspected "cleanup" needed in the bottom. On the other hand it seems several major parts have been replaced. It's a good deal for someone!

Making AM GREAT Again!

« Reply #15 on: January 12, 2015, 02:33:45 PM »

Where it on the left Coast,  I'd pick it up.

Was offered a 3cx3000F1 pdm modulated by another 3kF1 today for 5500 bucks.   Already had a single phase xformer installed,  complete and operational.

Continental was the brand.   315 I want to say was the model #.   Just too rich for my blood.

If I lived a little closer it would be in my garage. I just picked up the old WBLT transmitter last Saturday. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gates-BC-1G-1KW-AM-Broadcast-Transmitter-/321623692436?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item4ae2441494
This transmitter is definitely not a toy, but it is easy to move with a pick up and 3 guys. Like I said if it was closer I would snag it just for the iron. The mod transformer has to weigh at least 150 pounds. BC-1G 1967 Price - $5,590
