It's alive. IT'S ALIVE!!!

« on: October 23, 2014, 11:31:51 AM »

As you may recall, my brother KK4TVR has been working over the past year on his ham radio knowledge skills. He passed his General last June. He is running an FT101B and told me on-air last night that he "really enjoys the sound of AM". We chatted about an hour on 3880 KC. His 25W signal isn't doing bad at all.

My indoctrination of this new ham is complete and he is on AM. My life is complete.

Minions are wonderful. I prefer apprentices but minions will do.

He has the correct mindset. My indoctrination has led him to thirst for "mo' power". I informed him, as gently as I could, that he was "not ready" for an amplifier. I troubleshot his last problem and it turned out he had the Heath SA2060 hooked up backwards. Typical newbie mistake.....sounds familiar to some guy getting gray hairs over a particular Valiant?

I remember putting up my dipole when I got my Novice license and being very concerned about what leg the inner conductor should go to. I finally decided that it had to be the one closest to the transmitter...

Check, none of the League publications tell you this information!

You decided right.  It cuts down the RFI closest to the shack because of the Leeward effect.

Everybody knows that within 15 minutes of getting their General or reading page 101 from the first postwar issue of "Stars and Stripes" acknowledging the wonders of coax.

No wonder' FeeLeep' keeps the kid away from an amplifier.
