As much fun as Berryville, Shelby, NEAR-Fest or any of these events are from a radio standpoint, the time spent with your buddies is always the best part and far surpasses the value of any radio gear.

Such was the case for me prior to Berryville. After many hours of driving from points north and south, the Four Horsemen of the AMpocalypse (as someone joked at Shelby a few years back) got together at W3JN's place the day before that concluded with a ride to a local Cruise Night in Johnny's fine '47 Packard followed by a BBQ by Johnny with the best pork chops I've ever tasted.

Gotta say - the Clipper has a ride that rivals anything on the road today and much more character. My only regret is that time with friends is so brief and so seldom, while the days and months just fly by in a flash, faster every year.

Make the best of it - even if you have to use a hamfest as an excuse to get together. Whatever works.

I had to get him a chin cup, he was drooling so much. The Packard got waterlogged. He said something about where would he put the big stainless steel whip and would a Golden Eagle fit under the dash.... Wink

That Packard is gorgeous! Thanks for posting the photos of ALL the cars.
And it rides as good as it looks. As I said to Joe/PJP, it's like cruisin' on a cloud.  Grin

Here are the last three photos I took, including the interesting interior options on the '65 Imperial, interior of the Ventura, and a nice Torino. There were a lot of other cars there like a '56 Nomad and a bunch of newer Mustangs and one of those jumping bean cars, but they weren't interesting enough to photograph. Well, the Nomad was. I just forgot.

It was a great way to cap off the day after spending an hour or more stuck in I-95 traffic midday.

Twas great having you boys here!  Lotta fun, lotsa laughing, and a few beers were drunk, although I overstocked a bit.  Guess we're slowing down in our old(er) age.

I love the upside down bathtub Packards. I came close to owning one, but it was going to be so much more work than I had time for that sense reigned me in. That is a lovely restoration.

If anyone is looking for Packard engine blocks, I know of some in MA.

I think arrival time had a lot to do with it. The drive wasn't so bad, the traffic jams on 95 killed the day. By the time Steve & I got there we were approaching twilight and were pretty pissbeat from being in the truck for half the day. That beer you had with Poe on it was good stuff. Only had one but wish I'd had more!

One more shot I missed of the Packard, showing its fastback lines. I think I can speak for the other guys in saying we had a great time and you were a great host. In fact, considering location and the stock of beer and great toys available there, I'd like to nominate your place as the future location for all gatherings!  Wink

Seriously - thanks a lot.

Always fun to see what someone who knows about mechanical items decided to drive as a fun car.

Beautiful. Not you guys, the Packard.

diamond in the back
sunroof top
diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean

Gangsta whitewalls, TV antenna in the back, Silva Eagle in the hand and chrome skirts.

Fantastic pictures and it looks like quite the great time was had by all!  We were a few miles west over in Asheville, N.C. on vacation and never realized we were missing a great fester!

Martha and I would have loved all the great cars.  Johnny has quite the machine and as you said Todd, it apparently rides as good as it looks.

Oh, I did pick up the HBR over in Asheville and its gorgeous!

Steve or anybody that knows, where to Johnny find the car and how long has he owned it?   It certainly is a gorgeous example of a vintage Packard.

Making AM GREAT Again!

Kudos on a beautiful ride.....   And I'd say the pictures probably don't do it justice,  they rarely do.

Any more interior porn?

Glad you were able to get the receiver, Joe. Looks like I'll possibly be headed back over to the Charlotte area next weekend but that's still a bit of a haul from Asheville. I'm sure you two enjoyed the trip as it's beautiful over there. Hopefully you got to drive a bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I'll send some pics of the baby soon, I promise!

Last two shots I have are attached Shane, though more or less duplication.

I can tell you that this is the kind of car you dream of finding stashed in a barn or garage. Not an over-the-top restoration you'd be afraid to drive anywhere but more like the car granny bought new and only drove on Sundays. Very tidy. Shows some use but not abuse. I believe the big word today is 'patina'. I think it looks comfortable to be around or in or driving. And it has that cool smell that only old cars have.

Joe, GMS

Thanks, Joe.  I found it on Craigslist of all places, in Madison WI.  Bought it sight unseen and had it shipped.  Two true leaps of faith!  The car was better than I ever hoped.

There's a blanket on the seat as there are a few little holes in the drivers seat.  The back seat, however, is almost mint.

Todd, always a pleasure having you boys up here and we gotta do it more often!

The HBR is gorgeous and the builder was a real great OT'er.  We spent around 4 hours with he and his wife.  I will post a few pictures soon.

Yep, we went up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the visibility was about 20'!  The fog was just unbelievable and it was very unsafe since you could not see anything!  Next trip  down I am sure it will be better!

Can't wait to see the picture of the "young-in" !

Really glad you found it Johnny!  I know you will give it a good home and drive it as much as you can.  As you know your always welcome up here in GMS land.

We are thinking about hosting a GMS event next summer, kind of like what the folks out in Michigan did.  Tail gating and tours of the Ercildoun Amateur Wireless Museum.  It would be a great drive for the Packard.  Bring it up and Martha said she would give you a garage space to keep it inside during your stay!  Heck with our lift, if you need to do any work on it I am sure she would volunteer!

We had to sit on hard wooden benches!

The wood together with the fabric just really sets off the interior so well in Mr. JN mobile!

Was hoping you got a shot of the back seat. I didn't, and it's pretty cool. Aside from the arms/couch design of the seat, the back of the front seat is cut out to make an even larger area for leg room. If you look past the edge of the blanket you can see it on the passenger's side.

Reminds me a lot of the old Art Deco-area theaters with the overstuffed chairs and couches in the lobby or rest rooms. Definitely first class, all the way.

Sorry about the fog, Joe. The Blue Ridge is a must see when you're over that way. The Viaduct is near Boone, just south I think. You can see photos of it online or if you dig back a few years here you'll find the photos I posted. Built out of the side of the mountain, just incredible.
