I'd love to have a Globe King 500. Yet another rig I couldn't use but it would be nice to have. The are sharp looking.

He died on the 13th, it was posted on the 15th.
Everybody knows he died at age 100 in 2011?
I bet there was at least one ham who did not know.

Looks like he enjoyed himself right up to the end!  I do believe I posted this some time back, but for those that forgot, here it is again.  This was part of the photo collection of his 100th BD celebration.

Talking about long living Ham's, a good Amateur Radio friend of mine will be 98 in August.  He is still active on 40CW and has a very sharp mind.  Physically he is getting around real well also.  That is the guy who gave me his Hallicrafters 5T which was his first receiver.   I am currently restoring that receiver so he can hear it play again!

Ah yes, Leo of WRL fame. A name that goes down in history with the Henry Bros, Wayne Green, Hiram, DeForest, Hammond and other ham pioneers.

Quick story:

Back in the late 70's a ham friend and I had an August DXpedition on the ocean in RI. We stuck a vertical in the sand - at water's edge and put out some radials. Used a solid state 20 watt  FT-7 with a car battery. We were working all over the whirl on 20M ssb.

We realized we didn't have a name for the event. We both liked and admired Leo in a goofy sort of way, so decided to name it the "Leo Meyerson Memorial DXpedition."

"CQ CQ CQ the Leo Meyerson Memorial DXpedition!!" After awhile we were working a big pileup until someone broke in and said " Hey, how can it be a memorial event? Leo is still alive!! ?? "   [Oh, he is Huh?]

We quickly dropped the "Memorial" and continued on.

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

Great story and yes, we must watch using the tag line "memorial" before the Ham craps out!!!

I was recently given a very nice WRL wall map from the 50's from a very kind individual here on AMfone.  I am having a custom frame made for it and it will proudly displayed in the WRL area of my museum.  I don't have a lot of WRL gear but do have a few nice pieces from WRL.  My oldest piece is the WRL Globe Trotter.

Wow that sounds really nice. I wonder if that map can be copied on a large format color printer?

Might work well to simply photograph it with a hi-res digital camera and upload it to the net.  Mine in a heavy homemade frame was bought by my wife some years ago in a flea market and is somewhat ruined along fold lines. It was copyrighted in 1957.  I think those expires after 25 years if we put one on the net. Will have to check.

One neat thing, it has FCC monitoring stations listed and shown.
Primary:                                       Secondary:
Allegan, Michigan                          Ambrose, Texas
Grand Island, Nebraska                 Chillicothe, Ohio
Kingsville, Texas                           Douglas, Arizona
Laurel, Maryland                           Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Livermore, California                     Searsport, Maine
Millis, Mass.                                  Spokane, Washington
Powder Springs, Georgia
Portland, Oregon
Santa Ana, Calif.

Bet there were big fights to get the Lauderdale assignment. Grin It was quite a paradise before all the mega-development started.
Wonder if many of these stations still exist in same capacity?

The one that was in Douglas, AZ is just an abandoned derelict building by the airport nowadays Tongue.

The new site is a few miles North of town, in the desert.  Looks just like all of them now, a small building surrounded by radials for a vertical.

I believe they rent time on a satellite for monitoring purposes and have for the past 20 or so years.

To my belief they still have ground stations and triangulate or time correlate for HF, and the stations are able to be used unmanned so they can have as many as possible and control them from wherever. Must be some pretty smart setup. I admit I really know nothing about what they really have. Here is a map that looks recent.

It may be possible but where its been folder its very fragile but still in tact.  I think once its behind glass, it will stay there!   When I get it framed, I will take a picture of it and post it.

I think the ones I had before they went to new homes, only had the 48 states or was it 13 states.

None of the WRL stuff ever impressed me enough to generate a burning desire.
