It's been a rough winter down here overall, Steve. The natives aren't use to so much cold and repeated snow and ice storms. Even though it's something we'd shrug off or not even notice up north, it's a big deal down here.
Still a lot of folks without power over around Mebane and up in Oxford, just 10 miles or so from here. 1300 without power in our county alone. Three days or more for some locations that started getting hit Thursday evening. That makes people nervous.
I've got a little 3kw Onan W3S antique genny that is more a restoration project/toy than anything else. We decided a while ago that a decent backup generator is a must down here. Along with the occasional tornado like the one that hit Raleigh a couple years ago, we're also smack in Hurricane country. Now on top of that we need to consider ice and snow outages from increasingly colder winters.
Did my research and decided to get one of the old AT&T Long Lines backup generators made by GM/Delco. Found a 30kw driven by a 2-71 Detroit Diesel, but a 20kw would be more in line with our needs. If you happen to have any spares kicking around the warehouse.
