CW is just a narrower version of AM

« on: January 18, 2014, 12:13:00 PM »

The Linc Cundall Memorial CW contest is tonight and I will be on with an ARC-5 and BC-348. Fire up the Harvey Wells or 6L6 rig!

the Typical exchange is RST, QTH (State) Name, TX Year RX Year and Power. Then rag chew about your gear.

Sat. Jan. 18 @ 2300 GMT to Sun. Jan 19 @ 2300  GMT

Bands: 160, 80 and 40 Meters

Frequencies: 1.835 to 1.855, 3.550 to 3.580, 7.100 to 7.125.
Concentrate 160 meter contacts on the hour.

Objective: Contact the greatest number of AWA members or other
participating stations preferably using pre-1950 gear and low  power.

Special Conditions: Contest designed to favor those using low  power and equipment constructed before 1950. Home built gear
based on pre 1950 designs is also eligible. But, all are welcome.
High scorers should send in full details on equipment and station
photos.  Get that WW II surplus on the air! Logs are due four weeks
after contest.

Thanks for the heads up. I contacted a couple of stations calling CQ AWA on 80 meters and heard many more. One of the operators I worked was running a Hartley oscillator.

Its not to late!  Activity runs through 2300 Z today - that's 1800 Eastern - 6:00 PM for you civilians.

Mike - WU2D - your Frank Jones design 3W 6N7 TX sounded VERY good this morning on 80 - T9X! What's the circuit? Pix?

Would like to play more, but the never ending honey-dos call.  Will likely even be listening to vs watching the Pats and Broncs this afternoon.

1929 rig downstairs and  not set up  Angry

I just hung my last sheet of drywall for the museum.  It will be so great having multiple "permanent"  OT stations.

The Hartley oscillator I worked was 1929, 10 Watts operated by WT2W. The CW note was distinctive, a pleasure to copy.

I ran across a web page within the last year or two that included many photos of home built 1920s era transmitters of this sort, constructed on planks of wood. I can't put my fingers on the URL at the moment, but the web page certainly serves as an inspiration to gather the parts and put one together!  This is just one of a number of web pages devoted to the Hartley: http://members.shaw.ca/ve7sl/hartley.html ... scroll down to the the photo of the finished transmitter.

The Jones circuit is a simple push-pull TPTG oscillator with the crystal taking the place of the grid resonator tank. Compared to a simple 6V6 Colpitts, such as that in the Paraset, it puts out about the same power, but is less harsh on crystal current. I was getting 4-5 Watts out on 80M or 40M with about 10W in. I used an old 6N7 low mu dual power triode. I have two output tanks, one for each band so a plug in coild system is advised if you want more than 1 band.

The gimmick caps were added on mine and they helped the thing start on a variety of crystal types and they were simply twisted wires about 1 inch long connected on each side plate to grid.

Burt,

Those videos were hilarious! I spilled my coffee laughing. I have literally made contesters cry over the past few months. Knowing that I was a possibility for a trip to a very rare island doing military work, I took the time to contact the locals and begged borrowed and stole goodwill and secured a rare license. I secreted the ham gear onto the plane and got to the island as scheduled. After my work was completed, I had down time and asked the base commander if I could set up and work some stations. He was in horror and would not permit me to setup or transmit, but being a good sport, he put me on a Zodiac with a bunch of soldiers and we went fishing instead. Now fishing for me is like receiving that rare QSL, I am a nut case. So I was very happy with my consolation prize. The DXers around the world - not so much!

I assume you watched my video of a ham who thought a QSL card from Bhutan was the highlight of his life?
