A Ham op a little overboard with toys?
Truthfully the TX audio sounds really nice and the other operator was sounding pretty ballsy too. Nice balance to the audio.

I made that Recording.
That was Me and Greg, W5UDX on SSB at 6Kc Wide (aka. eSSB).
We were both using Modified Kenwood TS-950sdx's at 3630Kc.
That recording was made about 5 or so years ago.

What you are hearing is Greg Transmitting and being received and recorded from my Receiver. When you here me, that is my TX Monitor being recorded from my Transmitter.

The Compression Distortion is HORRID on that utube link.  Angry
Here are some good clips from my archive.

This is an MP3 of about 4Mb...

And this is the unadulterated copy in WAV, its about 22Mb...

Are there known links for the mods to the Kenwood radio?
I had a modified TS440 that got very close to B'cast audio, but the SSB selectivity was not the same as my untouched TS440.
Pretty unbelievable TX audio from that Kenwood BTW. Good to know that your TX audio was being recorded.
I guess there is............hi

Mmmm yes indeed Fred, and I think I own that particular VW-modified TS-440 at this time. It does sound fairly spectacular, but I think I am going to put it up on the sales block due to under-utilization here! Having worked Mike on 15 meters with both AM and ESSB I'd have to say that he is the man where it comes to making sideband pleasant to listen to. Mike, I still have a TX profile on my Flex that you helped me dial in last winter and it's simply named "Z5Q". I get nothing but good reports with it on sideband.

:O)

Fred & Rob,

IIRC that rig may have the 455K-12 filter instead of the 455K-14. The 12 has a better shape factor but is a long way off from the 3100 hz Collins filter which can be stuffed in there.

All those mods seem ancient now.

Impressive.  Fantastic audio for essb, especially when listening to Mile/WZ5Q's file. (6Khz bandwidth)  Congrats on a great job of blending audio tailoring to your own God-given voices.

There's no substitute for a robust, manly voice with a little vocal fry mixed in. (And some broadcash voice training)

The harsh reality is unless the majority of us  consider a larynx transplant, we have little chance of sounding that good no matter how much gear we buy.   Grin Grin    [wish it were not so... sigh]

I really admire what the essb boys have done using 3500- 4kHz of bandwidth.  I would certainly be on there if not for 6kHz AM availability.

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

Reminds me of WA2OMH running hi-fi SSB back in the mid-70s.

I just woke up!! This was ESSB mode? Fantastic audio. When I heard the smooth audio I automatically thought A.M. mode.

This is worth hearing again.  This is 6 KHz eSSB. They sound tremendous on sideband!

Making AM GREAT Again!

Look for some VE7RF.  He's another ESSB guru, especially with the FT1000.

A 3cx3000 final really keeps the noise level down when he speaks, as well.

He's a pretty good guy, all around, as well.
