Monday Evening 20m AM Gathering, August 12, 2013

I got in late, and left early. Conditions for a change were excellent with many reporting S9+20 to S9+40 signals. As the adjacent channel stuff slowly went away, some opened up the xmit and receive bandwidth. To me it was like 10M in cycle 21. I have an Icom R8500 receiver (HF/VHF/UHF), and it has a calibrated S-meter, and a 12 Khz BW option for AM. It is rare to open up the BW and still have good S/N ratio. Many stations had really good audio that cannot be appreciated in a 6 Khz BW.

The check-ins included but are not limited to:

W9AD
WA2ROC
WA1HLR
K1KW
AB4AN
KD6OS
W0LS
W0VMC
KI4JMH
N2XD
KD0ZS
W5JAY
WB1VWC
K0EOO
VE6CQ
WD5JKO

A historic night!

I believe it was the first time that a number of folks could hear and speak to a lot of other folks on the net.  And quite a few new folks checked in too.

See y'all next Monday nite.

Chuck K1KW took a leadership role since virtually everyone copies him. He made the role call several times, and then later turned over the task to Robert W0VMC. Good job guys...

A good night on 20m AM.

Tried to check in last night, but guess nobody was copying my Viking II.  Could copy K1KW with the RF gain all the way down on the HQ-170.  Though about disconnecting from the antenna relay and using a clip lead on the receiver.  Maybe next week.

It is unfortunate you guys did not get in. 20m propagation is funny, and this kind of thing happens. Many of the folks up north from me copied each other via back scatter. For example when Tim HLR raised power 4X, that allowed Chuck K1KW to copy him. To accomplish this, power and antenna gain are needed.

From my end in Texas, I got into the group running 55 watts into my vertical loop. I do admit there were times I heard weak hetrodynes when folks turned it over to someone else. From my end, they were all too weak to copy. I will try better given the chance to get some of those stations picked up.

Another option is to spin up or down 10 Khz and call CQ. Someone will hear you, or those with an SDR receiver will see you, and might move over and hook up with you.

We finally worked you last night Steve on 14,330Khz. At first you were in the noise, and then later you were booming in.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

Conditions were decent, and we had a good group. I got in late, and left early. Here is my partial list of stations that came by to check in:

W5JAY
W4BFS
KF7IYP
KD6OS
K1KW
WA1HLR
W9AD
WA2ROC
KL7OF
W8GPA
W1GUD/4
WB1EAD
W0LS
W0VMC
KB2WIG
W5DT/1
W2IMX
WD5JKO
And several others........

A good get together. It will be interesting to see how propagation holds as the daylight hours decrease. Last year we disbanded the group in late fall since we lost propagation right after dark.

Glad I made it!..made a few contacts Aug 22nd but conditions were excellent last nite..especially delighted to hear Steve out there in Tum Tum..someone should send ya a xtal for .330..nah all it takes is a slight twist of the dial and ur signal was S9+ Steve..gud to hear most of the regulars we've wrkd on 15mtrs..fellas you really should try this on 20mtrs..the prop path there is far greater overall than 80 or 40 as a rule..now if we could only get 15mtrs to do the same at that time of day..well..hmnn?  73 de DAVE

WD5JKO S9

Honorable mention --

KL7OF  around S3 with QSB

All this is with my IC746 and  the 80m dipole two half waves in phase @ 30 feet.
Maybe I'll get them half waves up a bit higher.

I'm thinking what with it being Labor Day and all..there should be a fairly large turnout tonite..hopefully we in the North East can be there..thunder boomers and heavy rain at the moment..also may I suggest one of you "middle of the country" ops sorta lead the way as far as checking in and being hoid..Harry W0LS along with Robert W0VMC did a fine job last Monday sorting things out..in any event keep ur powder dry and we'll try and make it           73 de DAVE

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

Conditions were long, and later shortened up. Many stations that heard each other the last few weeks could not do that tonight. At my location in Texas, I had decent copy on most.

Glad I got on last night.

I could only hear 2 stations; WD5JKO and WA1HLR.
Both were 10 over most of the time.

Would appreciate anyone recording my station
so I can make improvements. Email to carl@n9efj.net

The wire antenna was full of static and difficult to tune
for 20.  I Used my vertical
Penetrator- 22 ft. Noise was S5-6. I plan to work on
the wire and shorten it up some.

No BA's here. TS-940 and NCL-2000.
Got an Apache but can't man handle 'em anymore.

Thanks for letting me check in. I'll be back...

IF all goes as planned, I should be back on the air for next week's net. I have just a little more work to do to get the antenna installation finished.

I've missed AM and being on the air in general. Watching Eric get started has pleased me immensely.

Yesterday I got a nice letter in the mail (USPS) from a SWL named Joe who lives in New Hampshire.

Joe has been listening to the Monday evening 14,330 group for a year now on a Lafayette HA-600 receiver.

 Here are a few quotes:

"I've been listening to the net for about a year now, and checking on the results on AMFONE site at the library computer"

"Haven't noticed any up to date posting...shouldn't always be you!!"
-> Joe, my thoughts exactly!! There might be a "smug" factor in play here.. Wink

"The best signals heard (Oct 1) were W9AD, W0LS, and KE7TRP"

"I think K1KW might be about 75 miles away from here. Can't figure why he comes in?Huh (He's too close!)"
-> Joe, check Chucks QRZ page..

" Miss some of the original group that started this...WS4B, N2XD, and KD6OS...where are they?"

The letter really touched me, and makes me want to participate this coming Monday night.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

Tonight the group was still going strong after 8:30 PM CST when I turned off the equipment. The "Tron", WA1HLR was carrying on with multiple stations in California.

I'm sure I am missing a bunch of stations, but these are in my log:

WA1HLR - Big Signal with that Lazy H
W9AD    - Dave, always a good sounding signal. When Dave exits, there is no one left to zero beat with!
WA2ROC - Dick had some rig troubles, but came back later with a big signal
W7IUC/4 - Now Norm could still be 40/9 when 10 Khz high in frequency....Big signal!
KE7TRP  - Clark had a spectacular strapping signal..400 watts into 4 elements at 60' has something to do with that.

Hi Jim,

Just a correction.  You got my call wrong.  Its VE7HLO not KE7HLO.  Hello from the West Coast of Canada in Surrey BC Canada.  I am amazed that anybody heard me with my flea power dx60b.  I am looking forward to partaking in the group.  Next time I will throw my DX100 on or my Viking Ranger II with my 2 813s in grounded grid.  I am also thinking about pulling a 20 meter delta loop up the spruce tree in my back yard instead of tuning up the 450 ohm line fed 80 meter doublet.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

Last night we had a real treat. We had two groups (14330 and 14340), quickly changing propagation, and some heavy SSB QRM that came and went like a brief storm. We persevered, hung on, and the experience for many was a bunch of fun.

I logged the following stations on 14,330:

W7IUC
WA1HLR
K1KW
N8ITF
W9AD
W5QAP
N0RMB
N1HCE
WA2ROC
KE7TRP
K1ETP
KB1VWC
KD0OZS
KL7OF
WD5JKO

At one point during some SSB QRM, somebody (W9AD?) broadcast the famous Astabula bill, W8VYZ quote, "There Ain't a Slop Bucket in North America that can Bother Me!" It was true too, as all the SSB stations that came on top of us quickly fizzled out, or moved away...those that moved up were surprised to find another AM QSO on 14,340!  Tongue

Also, I hope our SWL friend, Joe from NH had good copy from many stations.

I wanted to join Jim but I had a close slop bucket group on 14.332 that would just not go away.

This bunch seems to run a net all day and then they have to chatter all night. It was disapointing.
