I get frustrated when a professional can't even see when a mic is out of phase in AM modulation. I can see it on a 'scope immediately.
WBCQ did something with cabling or changed out a processor and my mic audio is now incorrect. So a week of trial and error of me flipping the mic phase on my audio console to get back with pos peaks.
It's really very obvious on the 'scope. There are no big pos peaks and it hits heavy and hard on the negative peaks and causes baselining.

After reading all the comments with well reasoned experimentation, I think the Super senior is a really nice piece for 160 and 75 and would also seriously consider getting one if it did 40.  As we get older a lot of us are delighted with well performing, lighter weight equipment.  Yeah, Understand that the higher freqs are a challenge but I'd prefer 75 and 40 if possible and a new model was limited to two bands because of price point or design considerations.

Also a tailored audio conditioner mike preamp to fit under desk stands of dynamic mikes might br a good next step for DYY.  D104s are no longer made, and finding good elements for all the orphaned mike stands out there is becoming a crap shoot.  Obviously the d104 has always been a stellar performer in AM mode, given proper loading impedance.

Slight change of subject, but lashing up a mike amp with headphones and several different input, ( single, double, four prong and 1/4 in. And Collins)  jacks might be a neat box to take to hamfests to try out all those "pristine" d104s for sale.

We are on the same page.   I have probably had a hundred D104 mics and every damn one of them sounded different.  I could swap the head and be amazed at the difference in sound.  By now, alot of them are bad.  The D104 is my favorite but it is a real crap shoot.

Yeah, I dropped the best one I had off the op desk while shoving stuff aside to work on something a couple of months ago. Makes you want to cry as loudly as knocking that 4x1 or 1500A7 off a shelf.  I assure you the crackled, badly distorted and anemic excuse for a sound that it now has would make you cry even more.

So I heated the element wax, resoldered, you name it figuring it was totaled anyway.  It stayed the same,... At its lowest orbital state, so to speak.  I couldn't even break it... Just kept mocking me with the horrible audio.  Thinking about cutting it open and really playing with it. Saw something on the net about that.

Maybe someone could professionally get Astatic's stuff and start making elements again. Too bad the 70's CB bubble collapsed so quickly.

Well, don't want to redirect  the thread, so will stop here.

Rick:

Sorry about the D104 failure. I have a couple and they sound different. Will get Peter's D104 working in time. A 40m rig is a little harder to make efficient. Gate drive capacity becomes more of an issue.

Mr. MOP:

As far as WBCQ total phase, I think the only thing to do is to add a phase rotator on your announce mic to make your voice as symmetrical as possible. This way it would not matter what phase the audio at the station is. As stated elsewhere on this board there is a populated PC board on eBay for about $20.00. You'd need a box and +/-15 volts.

In the meantime, I made a fresh recording this morning with the latest audio settings at W1ZZZ. Peter did some longer distant QSO's last night and some contacts had trouble with Peter's bass, so here is a recording with Peter switching in the Symetrix 150hz HPF in and out, which I suggested he use at night when the band goes long. Also I think my rx audio may be out of phase as I see more negative peaks than positive. Not an issue for me.

73,
Dan

Nice and clear. Good job guys.

I agree, Kill the bass when the band goes long. Nothing worse than listening to muddy bass all night.  Listen to w0VMC sometime.  CLEAR and loud.. No matter the conditions, its 100% copy

Read thru the comments here, many thanks to all contributors.

I just got a K7DYY 80/40 Super Senior from Tom W2TBJ, seems to be about a year old, like new.

Looking at cabling it up soon, testing it out on the bench and then racking it.  I don't have a fancy multi-freq eq, just a Rockville PPA20 preamp with a low/mid/high adjustment, I figure good enuf for now to get things going.

From what I've read, seems 200w carrier is where I should be setting up.  I do have the REA mod monitor inline for testing, as well as a load and local receivers.

See you soon on the Big 85.

Cheers and best 73,
Bob

There are many upgrade kits for the D104 using inexpensive electret mics. Or roll your own. A battery, capacitor and trim pot is all that's needed.  Don't let those empty bodies sit. Put new life in'em. I've done 2 with great results.

Thanks.  I've been selling D104 upgrade kits for some 25 years, https://w2eny.com/
I have a short neck TUP9 that I've gutted, put my element in and a pre-amp board I got on ebay that has high and low freq adjust pots.   Check it out,  https://www.ebay.com/itm/174339450360
