Hi!

I now have my HF-80 system up and running, only a few minor things to fix.
At the moment the following parts are used:
HF-8030 Power Supply
HF-8020 PA
HF-8010A Exciter

I have two HF-8090 Remote Control and a HF-8040 Antenna Coupler waiting for being put in to work.

Do we have any other HF-80 users here?
I have attached a picture of the stuff that I use now, sorry for the poor quality of the picture.

Boy, that brings back memories.

Back in the mid-80's, I bought 6 complete HF-8022 10 kW amps with only burn-in hours showing on the hourmeter in a bid deal.

Amazingly compact for the power level.  Autotune from 2-30 MHz in 2 seconds or less, used a pair of 4CX350's in the driver and a 4CX15,000 final.

I sold 5 back to Collins, and one to Murphy's in El Cajon.  It went to a collector in California.

I wonder where they are today... Huh

digging up bones .... digging up bones .... just got a 8020 and 8030 and lowboy cabinet .... need skizmatic diagrams, if possible ... can anyone help ?

At one point,  Murphys had more of those and the little brother,  with a 10k tetrode than you could shake a stick at.

Little birdie said all the single phase units where sold to ham friends.   3 phase powered ones went into a connex box.

I apologize,  but I was wrong.

Murphies had a bunch of 208U-10 units.

Still a pair of either 300s or 350 tetrode driving a single 10 or 15 grand.

Hello to the group,
I have recently purchased HF-80 system.
Last time when it was used it was fully functional but that was many years ago.
I will try to fire it up soon. Need advise.
Should I just plug it in on mains 220 V or should I use variable transformer and slowly raise voltage from 0 to 220 V
I am concerned for tantalum capacitors inside.
Any advise is appreciated.

Hi, Zeljko, and welcome to AMFone!

For a solid state receiver, running the rig up on a variac is useless and could cause damage.  Here's why:  those things are full of TTL chips that want 4.5-5.5V and they get really screwy outside of that voltage range.  The voltage regulator might also do strange things. 

You're wise to be worried about the tantalum capacitors, but in my experience they'll just short with no notice at all.  I would check the power supply rails for dead shorts, and if you find one, remove cards until it goes away - then focus your efforts on the last card.

I just repaired a ITT McKay MSR8050 that had bad FETS in the switchmode power supply; when I replaced them and repaired the other damage in the PS, it ran for a minute then died.  A tantalum had shorted in the synthesizer - it was easy to spot because the current burned away the circuit board trace.

I learned about tantalums while at GE ... the working voltage is absolutely not to be exceeded under any conditions .... best applied at 1/2 rated wv max ...be very wary of inductances ... too expensive and filtering is now done well with electros except at high temps

Hi!

When I prepaid my HF-80, bringing it back from a number of years of sleep, it did a few things.
Checked the equipment for obvious faults and possible problems, specially HV-related circuits.
Then, it was powered up, running filament only, for probably 6 hours.
Then I felt lucky and turned on the HV, left it like that for a few hours.
After that, I tuned it into the dummy load and all was fine!

If this is the way to do it or not, I must say that I do not know for sure.

Please find attached a picture of my HF-80 and a receiver from RFT, EKD-515.
(the black spots on the wall is dirt inside the camera...)
