The link below is a recording made on 40 meters a couple of days ago of Bob W2ICQ on his "new" (homebrew) 4-250 by 810's through a BC-610 mod transformer. Bob is a prolific master builder and always puts out a tremendous excellent sounding signal on all his transmitters, with absolutely no processing..

BUT...  Here is the GREAT thing to know.. If a carrier is detected anywhere NEAR your operating frequency the "AM SENTINEL" will detect it, and defend your signal purity.. Listen to the whole clip..

Hah! I love the AM Sentinel feature! Kinda sounded like my wife when I forget to take out the garbage. One of the interesting things about working Bob is that you can never tell which transmitter he's on. They all sound excellent with smooth, natural sounding, loud audio!

And that's the way it should be.  Another station of note is Stu, AB2EZ. The only difference you can tell is when he is using his 20 watt E rig versus his QRO stuff. Otherwise, you just can't tell

The Sentinel did a nice job of eliminating the irritating part of the AM QSO (hetrodyne) going on under Bob. But if the offending station(s) were closer the chatter would have been louder??

"Which caused more interference, the carrier or the sentinel?"

That would depend totally on your interpretation..

I don't get what happened. I listened, heard the interfering carrier being tuned, then heard some noise. What precisely took place?

It took me 2 times to figure out what was happening, but what you hear is the off frequency carrier being dumped, then when it's gone, another carrier keys up on that frequency, and announces (using a recording of Timtron saying his famous line), "Hey dummy, use a dummy load." I'm guessing that this is somehow done by Bob's transmitter, or by some other piece of equipment in his shack? How exactly does it work?

Ok.. Guess for the guys here in the East who regularly hear that famous line, "hey dummy, use a dummy load!!" that transmission under Bob's carrier is totally identifiable..
That WAS TIM, WA1HLR (not a recording..ha) defending the frequency.. The true AM Sentinel..

Bob is a talented bulider but he was just making a transmission with a great transmitter..

Ahh...Doesn't surprise me any that I wouldn't have just guessed the obvious, but that would be nice to have something that would automatically detect a carrier, zero-beat it, then announce "hey dummy, use a dummy load." Probably wouldn't go over too well, though.

Jeff, some of these guys are too young to catch your clever reference to the 1977 horror movie "The Sentinel". It's amazing how much Timmy looks like Deborah Raffin who played Jennifer in that movie! Maybe the "tuner-upper" phenomenon is an east coast thing but it seems to happen more frequently now than ever. Thankfully, the AM Sentinel is there to offer protection!

BAWAHAHAHAHA..    Hilarious.  Thats clearly Tim yelling at the guy.  Good stuff.

W2icq has super clear audio.  Thats the kind of audio I like.  Loud and clear.  No bass boost crap.

Timmy and the "use a dummy load" will forever be an all-time AM classic! ! ! !
I just love that one!

Although as many will tell you: It is ALWAYS permissable to tune up on top of an AM QSO..... (As long as you intend to join that QSO)  Grin  Grin

// Kinda sounded like my wife when I forget to take out the garbage. //

But then
the only correct response would have been

"you cooked it, you take it out..."

As long as you remember the rules, you'll be fine. (Or at least live to see another day.)

Rule 1. E comes before T. Use you Eye's before you use your Tongue. Always, ALWAYS scan the immediate area for heavy/sharp things before yapping out what could possibly be the last words you ever say.

Rule 2. Know and practice your exit strategy. If you run face first into a door that opens inward instead of outward, and cause yourself to get caught and killed, it'll be your own stupid fault for not practicing.

Rule 3 (First hand experience with this one) is for the single guys because we know we already have the milk in the fridge. This is all about test driving the cow. If you say something stupid, YOU ABSOLUTELY need to read the response properly. If the eyebrows go up, the eye's get big, and the face starts to get long, You MUST resist the urge to go in for an apology because your being lured in for the kill strike. To test this, take a tiny step backwards. If the face doesn't change, then go in for the sorry honey. BUT, after taking that small step in reverse, the eyebrows come DOWN, then it's time for rule #2. Forget about rule #1 because it's going to happen anyway, and it's hard to hit a moving target.  Grin Grin
