Can hardly believe this!  $4,000.00 for a KWM-2A in the Samsonite suitcase.

Check it out for yourself - Item number 140636338418

The radio was offered as "untested".  Didn't even include the power supply.  That's up for auction now.

Anyone want mine for $4,000.00?  I'll throw in the supply.

Recent sales for the same type unit:

$500
$800
$1300
$1400
$2200---Somebody found one worth a bit more than half that $4K unit.

Asking $ ain't always gettin' $.

A KWM-1 is "more" cool (and cheaper)!

Once in a while eBay regresses back to what gave it a bad rap. Or Phools out there that have excess income. Prolly one of those millionaires that won't share their money with us plebeians.

And the Collins radio worshipers are still around paying their penance to be able to own one even without its power supply.

Just remember, it's not eBay, it's the people using eBay.

Here's the pricing deal on Collins gear.

For $1,000 you get a rig with 1 application of ArmorAll on it.
For $4,000 you get a rig with 4 applications of ArmorAll on it.
For $10,000 you get a KWM-2 that was personally used by Art Collins in his home (one of the fifty out there)...AND 4 coats of ArmorAll.

OH!  I get it!  It's the Samsonite case.  It's a "collectors" item.  That makes all the difference

Armor-all is a common ebay trick for shining up more kinds of junk than old radios.
Monkeys are attracted to shiny objects.
ebay buyers are often "shined" after which some "reflect" on their decision.

Nothing rare about that, Al. Aside from being a later production round emblem model with teflon wiring and plug-in relays (both of which do add value and utility to the set), there's nothing about the radio itself to command that kind of price. Mike didn't make mention of the one thing inside of interest: the DX Engineering speech processor. These are pretty scarce and highly-desirable to the collector crowd. They do actually work pretty well, too. I've got one in my -2A. I just don't see it being worth that much more. Couple hunnert bucks, maybe.

As illustrated by Dennis, prices on these radios tend to be around or below $1K these days, down from the $2-$3K prices more typical for late production examples a few years back.

Someone sold a Johnson Ranger on there recently for $750, too. Wasn't even one of Dee's or Chuck's high gloss repaints that look better than new. Others in similar condition have been between $200-$400.

Could be shills, or an example of why auctions benefit sellers and not buyers: the proverbial pissing match. More likely a newbie or two who doesn't realize how common these sets really are. Even in good shape, they're not *that* rare. Aside from the Rockwell/Collins-badged units, which are the same exact radio with a different badge. Collectors love 'em. Users could care less.

I agree with Steve: it's not ebay, but those using it. Ebay does flog the snail snot out of every possible fee angle, but it's still a voluntary system. And for anybody out there with enough disposable income to pay $4K for a $500-$1K radio, I say more power to ya. At least you can get some enjoyment out of the radio. Not so for the money wasted by our elected officials.

ArmorAll - baaaaaad. Never use it on anything that might need paint touch up someday.

Hell, I got the Samsonite cases for all 3 pieces that have. I'll even throw them in for $4k and offer the Armor-All as an option. And if they talk real nice, I'll even throw in the crapstal pack.

Hmmmn? Guess I'll have to dig mine out and see if it still plays. I have the power supply and speaker as well, might be time to put it on Epay if they are approaching what people pay for rigs made by Adolf and Co.

Yes, no screw-over job is complete without the red drape. I heard that seller got off fleabay due to the fees and now operates his own website. Can't say I blame him.

UPDATE!

Looks like the buyer didn't follow through with the $$$$.  It's listed again with a Buy-It-Now of $4,200.00 but will entertain offers.  The current item number 140654204018.

Interestingly enough the week after the original auction ended the same seller listed a 516F-2 power supply (also in the suitcase) and sold it for $371.00.  (A couple of weeks ago some shyster well known to us sold a 516F-2 supply without the case for $460.00 then the following week sold the cabinet for another $200.00).  Now he has the radio for sale again and no power supply.

eBay is seldon boring.

The saga of this KWM-2A never seems to end.  The other day I noticed that the auction had been ended early by the seller.  Today I see it listed again, this time as a regular auction item.  Starting bid $600.00.

It will be interesting to see how this one ends.
