I've been listening to you guys but the copy here is just a bit too much on the side of being a chore to break in and participate, so I read the mail for a while with cans on and I think I heard Slab piss and moan about groups with long geezermissions (or something, I may not have heard right).  I'm tired from spending the day shipping stuff and adding 25 feet of wire to my feedline for the 80/40 m. dipole and the usual weekend duties.  been up since 4 a.m.  There's some dang QRN from somewhere too.  Must be that storm out in Oklahoma.  This morning there wasn't any lightning anywhere in the CONUS.  Now most everyone must be watching the world series.

Steve,
Sure was a blast on 3705 last night.  After almost 3 hours I needed a break and went QRT.  Frank did real well with making some good old buzzard transmissions.  He held up his end real well.  Not to shabby for a break in guy Smiley

Especially good hearing 2ZE on after a long absence.  Hopefully Mike will become more radio active.

Yes, the 160M portion of the 80M band was FB OM.....

Last night was quite a treat for operation in the lower regions. The two sound checks below show Steve and Todd crushing the static crashes that slowly built up through the evening here in the northeast. You were both consistently S-9 + 30 as the clock moved towards 1 AM. Very nice signals. There is a little bit of synch detector warbling in both recordings at several points as it seemed to get confused by static crashes and selective fading on a few audio peaks.

I hope Andy does document what he did with the 380. That was quite interesting.

Rob W1AEX

Loud!

And CLEAR! It was a great night for AM!

It was great hearing folks like W2ZE, KB3AHE, and KA8WTK back on the air. Particularly Mike who has been missing from the airwaves for a looooong time. He had a potent signal with the HF-300 rig last night, looking forward to hearing more of that.

It still puzzles me how the static gets louder later in the evening, but considering the fact that we rode that frequency for a good 8 hours, no complaints. Must be the band goes long, allowing storms that are still active to come in.

I can buzzard with the best of them, I just prefer break-in with big groups.

Nice recording, Steve!!

I did not listen after I signed, but even though the group was 5 or 6 people most kept transmissions kind of short and it went around the horn pretty fast.

Todd, 160 does the same thing at night concerning static getting worse as the night progresses.  As the band goes long, you start hearing every snap crackly and pop across the country.  That's why I prefer to get on earlier in the evening.  Plus some of the ghetto guys don't come down on 160 until later after 75M starts going long.  So we each have our chance to operate the way we like to.

Condx that night were extreemly good! Signals were big, and noise was very low (for my location) The noise floor was around S-2 or 3 on the SX-28. Signals were all big with most being 40 over or better. Really good condx for an AM QSO. I hated to pull out when I did, but I had to get up fairly early for a small fester on Sunday. Even heard Kevin chime in (KB2WIG) right afer I shut down the 4X1. (He was kinda piss-weak compared to everyone else) I havent seen condx like that for a lllloooooonnnnnggg time. If the condx are gonna stay like that I'll get on more often. Letz face it, condx for the last couple of years haven't been anything to write home about.

Joe,
I can "old buzzard" with the best of them. That is why I intentionally don"t take notes. If I start taking notes, I'll try to address a comment to everything that everyone else said and go on for what seems like hours. This, then creates the "snowball" effect, and the time for the rotation gets longer and longer till you have enough time between turns to catch a catnap (or other things) without missing much.

I guess I'm just a Break-in kind of guy. After all that was my real incentive for building a big transmitter. For those that don't do break-in, you should have to go up against "The Fastest Finger In The East", (Ralphie)! ! !  It is a lot of fun to "stir the pot" in a good break-in session. All it takes is the right comment at the right time and the whole thing goes right to hell in a handbasket.   Grin  Grin

Frank,
I fully understand that your a break in kind of guy and that's Hi-Hi-FB OM!  Everyone has a favorite operating style and more power to them!  Remember, I do check into the WFD net every now and then and my p.t.t. works pretty well except when one of my relays hangs up.  I say, "whatever floats your boat go with it".

I like to take notes so I can just make a few comments on the highlights of what others in the QSO comment about.  It's certainly unrealistic to comment on what everyone mentions.  That would never work.  There is nothing worse to me than talking to a guy in the roundtable that is very excited about something he is working on or whatever, and ignoring his enthusiasm.  A lot of people do that and those people love to talk but don't like to listen much.  My favorite type of QSO are discussions about technical things.  Nothing better for me than chatting with a guy that just finished building something and he is working out the bugs.  Hearing his issues and problems in getting it "Air Ready" creates a great story.

Mike,

Great hearing the HF-300 on the air.  It sounded great up here in PA.  Now all we have to do is get your Dad, 2ZM back on AM!   I want to talk with him using his Heising modulated Hartly up on Top Band.
