I'm curious what others are seeing for their download and upload speeds/bandwidths.  This link is one of many that willl measure it. Pick a major city closest to you and see what you get.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Comcast sent an email saying that their service is now faster than before, thus my motivation to test it. I'm generally pleased with the performance but curious how it stacks up to other services. I'm using a standard Comcast Xfinity cable line.

My results to NYC (120 miles) at 11 AM Sunday:

Download: 24.93 Mbps
Upload:   3.41 Mbps

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

33.85 Mbps download and 8.49 Mbps upload  to Washington DC at 11:30AM on Sunday using Cox for my ISP. It used to drop significantly when Anthony Weiner was tweeting.

0.74 down and .13 up to Washington DC.    About right for the cheapest DSL rate.

6.9 MBPS down and 3.5 up.
Using local wireless provider with Motorola Canopy 5.4 GHz radio.

No other options here in the sticks other than dial up on a POTS line.

From Saratoga NY using Time Warner standard Road Runner, They have one that's faster and one slower.

To: NYC  19.16 down, .97 up
      DC   11.01 down, .96 up
      LA     4.78 down, .95 up
      DAL   9.95 down, .95 up

Kind of looks like TW limits my upload speed but except for a few times I've uploaded some large picture files it doesn't make much difference to me. My internet station, using Remoterig equipment, works fine thru it.

The closest city on their list is 5000 miles away.  1.74 MBS down/ .4 up to NYC or Washington.  1.4 MB down/.3 up to LA.

OTEnet's cheapest DSL plan here.  Still, it's 50 euros/month ($75)

Those website speed tests all seem to require Flash  Huh which I don't operate.  Fortunately amfone.net works well enough without Flash.

But anyway, running curl to dev/null with a speedtest server on the other end tells me my 15 buck / month cheap ham DSL provides me with almost 77K download speed:

%curl -o /dev/null http://speedtest.sea01.softlayer.com/speedtest/speedtest/random1000x1000.jpg

p.s. what do y'all pay for your speed every month?  just curious.  If there's an ISP giving megabits for $20 / month I might consider trying them.  all the offers I get are these sucker deals--low rate for three months, six months then it goes sky high, or you have to get it with junk I don't want or need like telephone and TV.  I have a tv antenna and landline already.

Here's four snapshots in time over roughly a 1/2 hour period. For comparison, even if everyone was able to take a picture of their upload/download speeds at the same time, the results still would be somewhat meaningless, if your shopping, unless all the other variables are taken into consideration.

At 2:17 PM, 7/3/11:
Download Speed: 24312 kbps (3039 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5213 kbps (651.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

At 2:18 PM, 7/3/11
Download Speed: 25985 kbps (3248.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5213 kbps (651.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

At 2:35PM, 7/3/11
Download Speed: 29412 kbps (3676.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5223 kbps (652.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

At 2:45PM, 7/3/11
Download Speed: 20758 kbps (2594.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5213 kbps (651.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

DSL here at the camp 3Mbps down

.51 Mbps up.

One thing I noticed about this DSL line, when there is storm activity in the area you can hear it on the fone and the DSL is spotty. The other thing I notice on a DSL line is that the speed is always the same whereas the Time Warner speed can be all over the lot. My test was to Washington.

If I remember correctly, when you click on "New York", the location is somewhere near the Brooklyn Bridge on the Manhattan side.

It's also probably more realistic to view the actual data transfer rates rather the posted upload/download speeds since data transfer rates can tell you how much data is actually being transferred in KB/sec. i.e. how great is the pipe between you and the speed tester. Data transmission routing (how many switches does it go through first to get to you and the speed tester) and distance between the two locations also need to be considered.

Mine isn't much faster. In this very rural area of the US, all I can get is .78 MBps down and .21 up. And that's quite an improvement over what we used to get.

But I wouldn't trade this quiet life in the country for a fast fiber connection in the city. :-)

At the end of the day what do they mean? All speed tests are about the same as S meter readings in a round table.

In the grand scheme of things, probably not much. But at my speed, I cannot watch an uninterrupted streaming video. My DSL connection is shared among several other computers here. When two or three computers try and access the web, it's slow-motion time.

Neither can I host a web site at my QTH (which I have a very good reason to do), which I would absolutely do if I had a faster connection.

I have come to the opinion that the latest web page designs with all the crap and animations and my 10 Mb/s download I am now on par with downloading web pages with my old 26 kb/s dial-up of 3 years ago.
