Voltage Regulator IC question

Don,
Put some resistance in series with the transformer primary to drop it down a bit. I found these series regulators are not happy when you get to 40 volts input and about the only way you can kill them. you only need 3 volts above the output to make them regulate.  Changing the resistor to ground will not help because it is a voltage reference. You will have output -1.25V across that resistor. Try Mouser.
