Got my hands on a stock Ranger 1 (later version) with PTT.  It needed a little TLC inside to get it to work but I was on 3733 this afternoon and it was working.  Now is time to clean it up and do the mods. 

Next is to find a sx-100 or sx-42 to go with it

    The band was not in good shape  for our path this PM, sorry...

    There is an SX 100 on ePay from seller "radios-n-stuff" with
    about 5 days left for the listing.  Looks like it might need some
    attention but should be a quick fix.

    Rite now there are 4 bids on it and it's at  $22.50.  The shipping
    from CO is listed @ $47.87 and with proper control of bidding, it
    should go in the $150 range or less...

thanks Ralph.   I saw that one.  I am going to look for something closer to me that doesn't need to be shipped.  Especially at $47 for shipping alone.  There was one a few weeks ago that went for around $150 + shipping.

Although a bit larger, any of the SX-101 family would also make a nice match for the Ranger as would the SX-100's older brother the SX-96.  The SX-101 seems to go for a bit less since it isn't general coverage and doesn't have much appeal outside of ham radio.

Switch selectable sideband really helps a lot with QRM on AM and all of the Halli family from the SX-96 on has it; unfortunately the slightly older SX-88 does not.

Yea, and it sounded quite good as well. Condx was pretty bad, but when you rose up above my noise floor, the audio sounded pretty good!! Now all you need is some afterburner

I have an afterburner, but I gotta put in the mod to adjust the screen voltage to adjust the power outpoot.  

Also most of the mods solid state the supply and put a zener in the biass.  I do NOT want to solid state the supply and want to keep it period correct.  The biass goes into the modulator toobs.  How imperitive is it that the biass is regulated?  I was figuring just keep it as it is, but make it adjustable and put a big cap on it to keep it steady.  I am going to put much larger caps in the HV and LV supplies.  Probably around 330uf(2 X 680uf@200V) on the LV and 235uf(2 X 470uf@450V) on the HV.
