Interesting thread.   Kenwood may have been the first to generate SSB with digital phase cancellation for hams when they brought out the DSP100 box accessory for the TS-850.  The TS870 used the same DSP method to generate the sidebands.  I don't think the DSP100 could do double side band SC though.
