I have never worried about ESD or LSD or an other zap-failure mode...

My desk is and old metal thing...
I use a sheet of paper under the board while soldering.

The wood stove is 12 feet behind me.. nice and dry in here.

Never had any problems ... yet..

Oh yes... my soldering iron has the ground lead cut off... I don't wear a ground-strap, or have a rubber mat under my feet...

And I use metal tweezers to handle SMDs ...
