CW is just a narrower version of AM

« on: August 19, 2009, 10:51:39 PM »

It is looking like an increased turnout for the AWA (Antique Wireless Association's) 2009 Conference at the RIT Inn this year.  http://www.antiquewireless.org/otb/2009conf.htm

I will head out tomorrow and will be on the air with my mobile AM station.

Listen for the weak signal!

See you at the conference!

Well I got back last night from the conference after two great days in Rochester. This year they extended the conference into the weekend but unfortunately I had to get back. So I missed the Banquet and Auction. The guys will report in tomorrow I am sure. Got to see the AWA ham gang, Larry NE1S, W1UJR Bruce, W2AO, Stu, W1GIG, Tim, VA3AWA, Louis and many others.

The flea was up about 25% from last year which was good news. I picked up a few items - as usual I want to show you my haul - see pic:

2 Type 10Y (VT-25) tubes for a transmitter restoration I am doing.
A Canadian ARC-5 Transmitter
A 375V Dynamotor with mount
Two old buzzard Vernier dials
An old Type 80 Power supply
An old Vibrator Power supply
A nice little cabinet for a project
a meter case

One of the Type 10 tubes was a freebee but the total outlay was 47 bucks ..  not bad!

I can't wait to see some auction pictures.

Larry won the amateur construction contest with his sharp regenerative receiver and my little three tube Meissner Receiver took second in the KITS category.

Hi Mike,

Your wonderful rx is safe with me, I've got your book, ribbon and headphones back at the radio barn.
I sent you a photo this evening.

My Conference photos at http://gallery.me.com/brucehowes#100218&view=null&bgcolor=black&sel=23

Congrats on your entry and award, a very nice set and display!
I noted that someone snapped up the Meissner set in the flea market late Saturday afternoon,
perhaps they were inspired by your fine example!

Larry did win 1st place with his wonderful little regen set, what he affectionally calls the "Quasi- Wasp", loosely modeled after the Pilot Wasp. A neat set, and it works as nicely as it looks.

Great time had by all, very nice touch to get the AWA Review with membership attendance.
Look forward to reading your Meissner article and the "Love Relay".  Wink

Nancy and I enjoyed chatting with you over lunch at Dibellas.
Great food and fellowship - I love their submarine sandwiches as much as the conversation.

On Saturday evening, we had a nice gathering of the Buffalo AM group and their YLs/XYLs in Batavia for dinner, a most fine business time had by all. Tnx to Bill K2LNU for organizing this.

In the flea market on Saturday Larry found a neat Edison photograph, a wooden cabinet shortwave convertor and some other goodies.

Sounds like you had a good haul, our follows:
- Lafayette (Wholesale Radio Service) 1930s fone/cw tx, picked up along the way
- Very early Astatic mic head, came with Lafayette rig
- Bud plug in coil sets
- Very early AWA OTBs gift from my friend Bill F.
- Old Orange AWA Button, again thanks to Bill F.
- Taylor TZ-20s and TZ-40s from W1GIG
- Gross xtal holder and xtal, marked 3500?, gift from W1GIG
- 2 dozen Radio News magazines from the 1920s and 30s
- Nice old buzzard air variables, perfect for regen sets
- Nice NOS audio xformer, again, regen set
- A blue ribbon and Matlack transmitter award for the Gross CB-25 restoration

We left ROC Sunday at 0930, arrived back in costal Maine and unpacked
by 2030 same evening. Skipped the auction, no room in the car!

All in all a very worthwhile and fine business time, sorry it was over, had
a great time seeing old friends, and meeting new ones. I posted the review
which I sent to the AWA reflector below.

My Feedback on the 2009 AWA Conference

Just arrived back in Maine from the AWA Conference, and I'm happy to share my impressions
from the standpoint of an AWA member.

Museum - Changes were present in both the media center and the Annex. The media center is coming
along nicely, and looks to be a very comfortable place to research and study. Lots of work still to be done,
but the vision is solid, and the folks who CAN make it happen are in place. I was privileged to have a "sit down" with one of the folks on the board, and what I heard was most encouraging, things are moving forward,
and change, though it be hard for some, is happening and is going to keep happening.

Presentations - I must admit that I did not imbibe as much as I would have liked, so I can't offer
fair comment here, but the agenda was full, and the presenter's names were known to me as
high quality folks.

The Flea market - Good, not jammed, but plenty of things to spend your money on, if that was your
only intent, and certainly plenty of folks to fellowship with. In my mind the personal interactions mean
just as much to me at the selection of goods, perhaps more. The tent was a spectacular idea, and
I hope the use of such both continues and expands. Weather, except for a few short showers,
was good, but hot.

Contests - Selection of entries excellent, displays very good, it was easy to spend a great deal of
time just browsing the exhibits. Always a highlight to the event.

Book Fair - Good to see it returned to its former location, works well for everyone.
Excellent selection of both new and vintage books were offered, including vintage posters, schematics,
and other items of interest. The new AWA calendars, featuring some of the more rare artifacts in the AWA's collection are very nice as well.

Auction - I saw the preview, nice selection, perhaps not as large as previous years, but
certainly worthwhile. I did not attend the actual auction, I had to get back to Maine at a decent hour.

AWA Staff - 1st rate, everyone was helpful and tried to do their best. Organization was quite good,
and I found Roy very receptive to new ideas and suggestions. The focus is clear, and the meet
in general is on its way back up.

Photos - Will be posted soon, will message the group when they are up.

My thanks to Roy and his team for another successful AWA event!
I look forward to 2010!

Cordially,
Bruce J. Howes W1UJR

Too bad it's so far away from here.

I'll probably pass on Shelby, too.  It's over 460 miles away.  @ 350, Dayton is about my hamfest limit unless I could make it a group effort.  No-one else round here seems interested in Shelby.
