In my 1936 Radio Handbook for Amateurs and Experimenters, there is a very nice station photo of W9DXX with Alice sitting in her shack. Does anyone have any more bio information on her ?  |

I think Charlie was the fellow who built the rigs for her. His call was mentioned within the article.
Those transmitters and the control console look like the miniature version of the old Crosley WLW 500 KW rig. Very nicely done!

I think Alice was VERY well off from her family. She was a very lucky women to have been given such a wonderful opportunity in 1935 ! I cant imagine what that was like back then in the middle of the depression AND being so well educated about radio. That would be equivalent to one of us having a sprawling multi-hundred acre farm with a HUGE mansion and plenty of room to erect gigantic Sturba curtains strung between hundred foot supports.  |

Hi Stephanie,
The call rings a bell for sure. I know that I've seen another photo of her shack in the past, several times. I was quite impressed with her shack, as I recall, it appeared to rival the commercial HF communications stations of the time. Doggone if I can relocate the photo now, but I believe it is in one of the ARRL Handbooks a little after the 1935 ad.
I searched the old QSTs on CD for W9DXX and came up with one entry only - a photo of Alice at her operating position in the June or July 1953 issue, YL column.
