A 1977 remake starring Tommy Seebach.

Eeewww!!

A trashy disco version of a cool song originally done by The Shadows in the heyday of Instrumental Rock.  Complete with bad hair and bad clothes!  And, to add insult to injury, the guitarist actually managed to make a Les Paul Custom sound lame!  Tommy Seebach, you're NO Hank Marvin!

<Sigh!>

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

Apache was written by Jerry Lordan.  The song was written and first performed by Bert Weedon (an early UK guitar hotshot) in early 1960.  But due to dissaisfaction with the performance, it offered to the the Shadows back in July 1960, who made it a hit.  Moreso in the UK, than the US, but nevertheless it was a bit of a hit in the US for the Shadows:

Here's a film clip of it from the early 60s, of the Sahdows performing it:

The guy with the glasses playing the Strat, who kind of looks like Buddy Holly, is Hank Marvin.  He was one of England's early guitar heros.  BTW, the Shadows also used to be Cliff Richards' backing band, and still perform together occasionally.

Jorgen Ingmann did perform "Apache", but not until 1961.  Here's info on the lineage for Apache, including all of its peformers.

Cool!  Thanks, Ellen.  I wasn't doubting you, just didn't know.  Great song, I wish I had conquered it when I was younger and my fingers worked better.

I stand corrected.   Being played on a Strat with a Fender Jazzmaster (I think) for rhythm and a bass player with a cigarette tucked into the strings.   Oh for the good old days when mere mortals could play the popular instrumentals unlike say:

Yup, using the strings for a ciggie holder reminds me of a few dives I visited whilst living in Chicago. Big burns on the Hammond B-3s, too.

Now, that was one of my more interesting college era jobs..Working in the repair department at Hammond Organ in Melrose Park, IL.

Worked on the 4 to midnight shift. A couple of the guys were accomplished musicians. Whenever one particular dude finished a repair, he'd set that Leslie spinning, turn up the volume and start playing some wicked South Side  Gospel, then he'd seg into some Jimmy Smith blues, then off into a Kansas set.

No pay, fun job. In retrospect, how cool was it to be working on amps with 12AX7s  and 6L6s..Nothing quite like working with jazz musicians, either. LOL

Oops! I forgot to include the list of all the artists who performed "Apache".  Here it is:

http://www.secondhandsongs.com/song/9470.html

The bass player was a guy by the name fo Jet Harris.  He played for the Shadows until 1962.  His bass playing was considered very advanced for its time, and he has the distinction of being one of the first players in the UK, to play electric bass.  He also played what is possibly the first Fender Precision in the UK (in 1959) and was a fan of the Fender VI, 6-string bass.

After Jet left the Shadows, he had a solo career for a year or so, in a group called Jet & Tony (Tony Meehan, who was a former drummer with the Shadows).  They had a few hits - their most notable was "Diamonds" in 1963.  Jet played the bass parts on a tuned down Fender Jaguar (I played one in a band, briefly, about 18 years ago).  This song actually went to number 1 in the UK, knocking the Beatles "Please Please Me" from that spot.  Jimmy Page (who was a session guitarist at thet time), played acoustic rhythmn guitar on the song.  Jet also briefly played with the Jeff Back group in the late 60s.

Here's some of his stuff:

Jet (and Hank Marvin of the Shadows) also played some of the soundtrack music for some of the James Bond Movies:

I want to put in a plug for the younger generation.   If you follow that link in my earlier post you'll see it goes to Eric Johnson playing Cliffs of Dover, a fabulous guitar piece now immortalized in the video game Guitar Hero, a game I've never seen.  But who hasn't heard about it?

Well, you know what else is on YouTube?  Videos of young players -- teens and twenties playing that song. I just happened upon them. If you don't know it, take it from me, that is one tour de force Strato zinger composition. And they are playing it. They are great.

Now like everyone else, I was in a rock and roll band in high school. I wasn't that bad. I mean I worked out Clapton leads from his Bluesbreaker days by playing the LP at 16 over and over and over and over. But let me tell you I wasn't like those kids on YouTube.   Hats off to the guitarists of the much maligned Millennium Generation.

We've had Eric Johnson in twice for recording sessions. One visitor we let in made it by saying, "I want to breathe the same air as him..."
