Excellent Conditions on 80 Meters

The band was very good yesterday - no static, good propagation and almost no QRM from late afternoon throughout the night. A nice group held forth on 3725 kHz from 6:30-7 PM  to at least 10:30 PM EDT.

Later, I was able to work two European AM stations on 3705. Signals from Europe were very loud - easily able to copy both stations with 8-10 kHz bandwidth. Listen.....

Damn.

I really wish I could have stuck in there with you guys. Even with some of the dirty, splattery sideband traffic upband; Q5 copy was the rule, not the exception.

Oddly enough, the shack wasn't as cold as it has been when I've been in there with you guys in the past (when the band was crappy, even).

I think it's a psycho-sematic thing with the wind noise. Just the sound of the wind can drive the cold right into you. That, and I wasn't drinking any antifreeze.

Condx were nice and quiet all week.  S-2 noise level on Wed nite.  Nobody on down below, tho'.

I was working on an old buzzard GE YRS-1 sync detector in the shack all week and had the radio on, but didn't have the urge to call CQ as I had the slobbering iron in hand and kept having to go to the garage to get parts.

Well, condx. are better this morning, than they were yesterday. We had a major snowstorm, that dumped 16" of snow!!  I took the photo below, this morning of our snowfall.  I also replaced the RF amp tube in my SX-96, with a 6DC6 (it's listed as a replacement for the 6CB6 Hallicrafters used in the SX-96), which helped a bit with my BCI  intermod problem.  Condx. were much better this morning on 75, with over 61 check-ins to the Midwest Classic net.  Ole the Viking 2 was taking care of business.  Thom, your photo depresses me, I have powerlines like those, less than a block east of me.  Sometimes the noise from them is insane.

Enjoyed the QSO last night Steve, with you and the others who wandered in and out throughout the evening. Finally called it quits after 22:30 or so, left the frequency in the hands of W1IA and W2DTC. Would've loved to hear Henk and the guys, but I was pretty woofed after a hectic week.

Hope to catch up with some of you this evening. Conditions have been excellent, far better than conditions online.
