 I've  looked at this article but i wonder if using 4 inch copper flashing spaced at 1/2 inch in the vertical helix, the total length wouldn't add some considerable bandwidth.

Not sure if I'd spend the money on 4 inch copper flashing considering the price of copper these days.  Might be better off swiping it from a construction site.

I made a 1/4 wave (of wound wire) version of that antenna in college (got the design from an early 70s Handbook). It actually worked pretty well on 160m, with the FT-101B I had at the time.
