Attended a local hamfest a couple of weeks ago and picked up some home brew stuff. First, a completed, nice looking HB amp for $30.00, complete with a pair of 811A's. also a mod deck. Now for the technical question, it uses a pair of 9005's driven by a pair of 6L6G's. Real heavy mod iron, similar to the BC-610E. I have never had any experience with the 9005 tubes. Any insight or do I take a hammer to them?

Are you sure it is 9005's and not 8005's?   The 9005 is a UHF diode that  looks like an acorn, and is just a little over 1" tall.  The 8005 is a triode that is identical in size and shape as the 811A.  I use a pair of 8005's in the final of one of my homebrew rigs.  Check out the tube data below.

Those are good tubes.  I wouldn't take a hammer to them. If you really don't want to use them, I'll take them off your hands.  I'll collect all the spares I can find for my HB rig.  I use mine in the RF section.  If yours are good, they would make FB modulators.  I would keep them in the rig. Not zero-bias, but they would beat the socks off a pair of 811's since  they have 85 watts plate dissipation as opposed to 65 watts with 811-A's.  The filament is 10v whereas the 811's have 6.3 volt filament.

I have an old buzzard p/p triodes by p/p triodes rig. It is a pair of 8005s modded by a pair of 811s (not 811As). I wanted some spare 8005s, and it took me 2 years to come up with some spares. They're just about made of unobtaniun these days!! Dont take a hammer to them!!
