Any filter in the main path will stretch out the noise pulse. I played with this a lot and found you need a bit of filtering or you ended up with a hair trigger. Real balance act.

What's the MFJ circuit about?
Schematic anywhere?

Other circuits that keep the noise out before the detector or don't use pulse switching?
