Title: QEX
Post by: WA1GFZ on December 28, 2006, 11:13:20 PM
QEX has an interesting article on cloud burner antennas. Best is a H laying flat 125 feet on the long runs 65 feet apart. I think 1/8 wave high but they had gains for other heights.

A very, very lazy H.

I have a similar design in one of my antenna or engineering books. Reminded me of a broadside array that uses the ground as a reflector to make it unidirectional (straight up). IIRC, it was supposed to have 6-8 dB compared to a dipole. One would strap locally using this antenna.

Sounds like a similar performance as QEX article claims 12 db iso.

Problem is I don't get QEX.

The antenna described is also known as a "Shirley" array.  You can read more about them here:

Don, the only two ham magazines I subscribe to are Electric Radio and QEX.  QEX is the state-of-the-art stuff.  Indispensible.  It bought out Communications Quarterly, it's competition a few years ago. It continues in the role (and legacy of)  Ham Radio used to play.
