Title: Grandpa Smith passed on
Post by: KE1GF on April 29, 2006, 07:56:49 AM
Hey Crew, yesterday morning about 2 AM grandpa Smith passed on from a rouge infection which caused a systematic failure of his vital organs. I will miss him and it was his national rx which I first tuned in amateur AM QSO's. Although he wasn't a ham, he greatly enjoyed SWL'ing and he truely loved and supported my aspects of the hobby.

He made the difference in my life which provided the family support to do the things that I do. Thus I will continue on with my R&D work here in the lab towards AM technology. He used to call my projects "your inventions" he really didn't understand what I was doing but he observed my passion towards my work, which made him proud. The AM community provided one of the means for my grandpa to build a great trust and respect towards me. He was an integral part of me and from my point of view that made him a part of our community.

Regards,
-Bill 'GF

Bill I'm sure it hurts like hell right now as the sense of loss sets in.
But take it from me, when you've had the kind of support and interest from your grandfather that I too enjoyed with my grandfather, you'll eventually come to realize he's still with you in ways we can't really describe. Coming up on 30 years since my grandfather passed away, in his 80s, but he left me with SO much that at times my wife swears she knew him too -- even though he was long gone by the time she came into my life. Very nice to look forward too Bill, please try to know this right now.

Hi Bill:

I am very sorry to hear the news.

While this is probably a hard change for you, what keeps me going is the memory of my family and friends who have supported me. I am glad your Grandpa liked your inventions!

We're always here for ya.

73,
Dan

Thanks guys for all of your condolences.

When I would get sick and have to stay home from school, I would have to stay up in his bedroom away from my toys. But little did he know that I would fire up his national RX and SWL. That's where I discovered that there were actually cool people on ham radio, man was I a shady kid!  ;) Got my ticket when I was 14, but a bit to young and broke to build a station like I have today. Had to wait until dad got his ticket so that I could get some HF gear!

My condolences as well, Bill. You will never be able to replace him, but you will always have the great memories to keep with you. In that respect he will always be with you.
                   Condolences and best regards

Bill,

I always shared the following well-known passage from John Donne with my Introductory Sociology students.  It has so much meaning.

"Who bends not his ear to any bell, which upon any occasion rings?
But who can remove it from that bell, which is passing a piece of himself out of this world?
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
As well as if a manor of they friends or of thine own were;
Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

I have found in 66 years of life that not only does a piece of ourselves pass with the passing of a loved one, but, at the same time, a piece of that loved one stays with us even as he passes out of this world.  I had a wonderful relationship with my Grandpa Mueller, and part of me went with him.  But I often realize that a part of him has become a part of me.  It will always be so with you and your Grandpa Smith.  God bless you both.

Herb

Bill,
Sorry for your loss. Grand Fathers have a way of effecting your whole life.
My G.F's first love was the beach.....so I built a house down the street from his
on land that belonged to his friends. The wife was almost 100 and still remembered me as a child. It took her almost 1/2 a page to sign her name on the deed but it was important to her to do. talk to him often...
