Title: YEALLOWY Plastic
Post by: flintstone mop on March 29, 2006, 10:23:11 AM
Hello my Friends
The plastic dial face on my AF-67 is a little yellow from time, I don't think it's nicotine. Are there any cleaners out there that could" renew" it somewhat?

Thanks
Fred

I suspect it may be made of celluloid.  The stuff yellows with age, just like newsprint.  Something you will just have to live with.  Be thankful it didn't shrink and crack.  You might try cleaning it, but I'd be highly surprised if the yellow went away.  Be very careful of using any solvent stronger than a mild detergent solution.  I ruined a dirty but otherwise mint set of National type A Velver Vernier bakelite dials by trying to clean them with Fantastik.

Any chance it could be cataracs?

Post a picture of the Yelllowy thing??

Is it a flat bit or molded??

Might be styrene plastic... frequently used for meter fronts...

Most plastics will clean up with a very mild fine polishing agent - after a basic rinse and clean with something that releases the dirt, or maybe tobacco (smell it)? Don't use alchohol or solvents...

if it's flat, substitute some thin lexan or maybe even glass... did that on an old NC-100A dial face, which was flat.

Bakelite? Usually will buff with fine grade auto polishing agent/compound... Armorall sometimes puts the shine back too... but the buff is better...

Hello AM Folks
I thought I would revive this thread with an update. I was able to make that yeeallowwy plastic on my AF-67 shine like new with a careful polishing with ordinary car wax for clear coat. Apparantely the yellow was cigarrete crap. The wax didn't even hurt the meter reading switch markings on the plastic.
Now onto the building of the P.S.
THanks
Have a nice weekend
