WESTERN UNION TELEGRAMS COME TO AN ABRUPT END

Western Union has quietly stopped sending traditional
telegrams.  The company's web site simply says:

"Effective January 27, 2006, Western Union will discontinue
all Telegram and Commercial Messaging services.  We regret any
inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your
loyal patronage.  If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact a customer service representative."

According to one report, this ends 145 years of the telegram
business for Western Union.  Many old broadcast stations have
files stuffed with telegrams from the FCC; telegrams were at
one time the Commission's official way of sending time-
sensitive correspondence.
