Title: Hammarlund Four 20 Tank Coil - Info. Needed
Post by: W4LTM on August 17, 2005, 11:37:29 AM
Hi gang,

I am hoping someone can provide me with a photo of the correct tank coil (80 Meters please) for the Hammarlund Four-20 transmitter.  I have been using end-linked coils and the radio works, but I would like to see what should be in there.

The coil uses a 5 pin socket and has an adjustable link.

73,
Matt

Matt,
Is it a 5 pin round (807 style) socket, or is it a 5-in-line type? To my knowledge, Hammarlund didn't use anything special with the 4-20; and it's probably a proprietary type coil. Regardless of which type it is, I have plenty of both I could give you the data from.

Matt,
One more thing: Do you want end linked for the oscillator and center linked for the PA?

Hi Joe,

The coil I am using is a 80 JEL B&W (end link).  It fits the circular 5 pin socket.  I modded my own out of the 80 JEL by cutting the inside link (secondary L2) at the socket and adding a wire tap.  It works, but I really want to know what Hammarlund used - myself and another Four-20 owner want to see a photo or at least see the information on the correct (or proprietary) coil.

The ad in my 1948 handbook states: "A tap on the output coil assures a match between the output of the transmitter and any transmission line."  Not much to go on...

I guess I am a bit anal here, but my Four-20 Transmitter and Four-11 Modulator are in great original condition and I would just like to have an original coil for the transmitter.

Thanks,
Matt

Hammarlund 4-20...cool, very buzzardly rigs. Bought one (w/4-11 modulator) for $20 at Deerfield one year. It was also missing its coil set. Sold it for $20 the next year. Wish I hadn't.

How about posting some photos?
