I think I have been doing something really dumb for about 5 years and I need to confirm it.

I have been using a DEQ1496 in my audio chain for the past 5 years.  I have several profiles in the memory and selected one as the favorite and never looked back.

Yesterday I looked at the memory list and noted that it was sitting on the read-only one that comes preinstalled and is basically passive, does nothing good.  I selected the one I wanted and moved on.  The next time I turned it on, it was back to the preinstalled one.

It seems that every time it is tuned off, it defaults to  preinstalled one which means the I have been using that for the past 5 years instead of the one I worked so hard to perfect.

Tell me it aint so.

Hi Jack: Check the memory battery

I use the same unit and recognized that from day one. I’ve just accepted the fact and select the profile each time I turn it on. Keep us posted on the battery issue.

Thanks.  Pretty dumb assumption on my part but that does not excuse the dumb design.


I am not aware of any backup battery in the 2496.  There is no clue in the manual and nothing obvious from the outside.

It does not seem like that sort of a problem as stored setups are still there.

You could leave it on….

But, this is a cheap design. This is why Behringer stuff is considered semi pro, and why it doesn’t find its way into real pro audio systems. I install those for the day job, and a digital anything that doesn’t power up in a designated programmed state is utterly useless to me on the job…and at home.

We hams like to save money, but there’s a case to be made for buy once/cry once, minimum level of quality, philosophies here…

If you want a decent digital audio processor, there are diy options that are cheap, eBay pro level stuff, or big money. I don’t want to swerve the thread, but I’d be happy to expand on this and to help others go digital….
