Title: Eico 720 PSU
Post by: WA4WAX on April 05, 2022, 06:10:39 PM
The 720 has a choke input supply.

I am thinking about replacing the 40 uF with some 68 uF 105C that I have.

Thoughts?

You'll be going from a total of 20uF to 34uF .

Check the ripple voltage before and after and see if you see any reduction in the 120Hz ripple voltage.

I have read there are limitations on the tube rectifier for increasing the capacitance of the filters. I can't remember the complete story

If it's a choke input, it should be OK with a small increase.

It's always the right thing to do, to actually measure the peak current with full load. The normally grounded center tap is a good place for a shunt and scope, assuming the 720 uses that circuit.
