A few years back while living in northern VA I had come across someone who was selling those translucent dial drums for the Mohawk and Apache. Had intended to get a set but we moved shortly thereafter and I never got to it.

Both of mine have the usual cracks, the Mohawk drum has actually come apart and no longer moves. And now (of course) I cannot find the info on who sells them.

Anyone recall who is (or was) selling these? Worst case, I can probably glue the old ones back together - but if I'm going through the hassle of disassembly, I'd prefer to put solid ones back in.

Todd, there may be someone else but Glen Zook had some.  He is now SK and I don't know if anyone took over his stuff.

I received my replacement drums back in the late 90's or early 2000's. He had a bunch made up somewhere. It was a one-shot manufacturing  deal with some vendor. He had a 5 land call.

In searching the QSL.et e-mail archives, here's some info from Tony, K1KP, dated December 2002
"I just finished cleaning up a Mohawk. The dial drum was in pretty good shape, with just one or two 3/8" long cracks in the ends. I tired something which I think will help prevent the cracks from getting worse: I used just a small drop of thin CA (AKA Crazy Glue) on each crack. The glue wicks quickly into the crack, and almost completely fills the crack. I'm hoping this will eliminate the high stress in the area of the crack. The glue did not seem to attack or 'craze' the plastic drum in any way..."


Again, checking the QSL.net archives under Heathkit, Glen, K9STH, is the only one mentioned that did replacement drums. Looking at his current web site that's still posted, there is no mention of replacement drums.

I suspect you're on your own. If you're ambitious, you can buy clear acrylic tubes on Amazon and probably other places, and use the artwork link that Jim provided.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling after turning up nothing that the super glue route would be about the only option. I can't imagine trying to locate the proper translucent tubing then getting clean artwork onto it. There was someone selling them on ebay within the last couple years because I had bookmarked them, but with the move and everything else it never got done and they disappeared.

Fortunately the Mohawk drum only had two large pieces broken out of it. Enough to make it fall off the hardware mount, but no chips or slivers to track down or compensate for. The Apache drum appears fine (so far).

Was able to get it back together fairly easily. Some photos of the results.

24 hrs to set up before installing the end cap, then back into the rig.

Was able to remove and reinstall without yanking all the knobs and dropping the front panel. Made easier by the separate tuning cords for the band drum and tuning needle. Still took a little patience, a spring hook, and a few choice words to persuade everything back into place. Getting the drum to line up properly in the window on all bands was the most frustrating part. The converter band is still not perfect, but I'll never use that anyhow.
