The bullet shaped structure in the lead room contained an RF Ion source that had a pair of 4CX250B's in a self excited push pull oscillator that operated around 150 Mhz. As I recall the B+ was around 750v, and there was some VR tubes to set the screen voltage. The last few of these machines were taken out of service this year. The support for the bullet shaped terminal is the extraction supply which was a variable output that went as high as 400,000 volts!
In the first photo, there is a diagonal shaft inside the horizontal acceleration column. There is a U-Joint at each end, and the shaft is placed between a motor on the right side, and the generator on the left side. You can also see several white rods (delrin) inside that are horizontal. Each turns a variac inside the terminal on the left, and has a stepper motor on the right side. I have many fond memories testing out those power supplies. Two guys were running this machine, and then shut down the high voltage and take a break. They come back and notice the lead door into the HV area was open. So they close it, and restart the machine. The machine had lots of pumps, and made a lot of noise. There was a man in that HV room! So up comes the HV, 100kv, 200kv, 300kv...BAM! 100KV, 200KV, 300KV...BAM! The guy inside was hiding in the corner, and around 300KV a lightning bolt found him. The man kept his composure, and after getting nailed, he grabbed the big bullet nose shorting out the HV with his body. The Power Supply was only capable of 1ma DC, so it current limited to 1ma through the mans body, arcing through his shoes to the floor. Finally the two guys operating the machine shut things down, and went into the lead room. Here comes the guy from inside, and fists were a flying!
