Quite the collection I wonder who it belong to?

Man, I've got to start paying more attention to this stuff! I've got more than enough on my plate right now; really don't need to dig into another boat anchor, but those Viking 500's looked pretty decent.

The 1st 51-S1 is actually a LTV (Ling Tempco Vaught) G-133F which is the aircraft variant. Quite R@RE :)

This auction site also auctioned off a number of his items after the owner passed.

Looks like a handful of commercial guys dominated the bidding.  Whoever owned the stuff sure liked Collins, National  and Johnson gear. Can't take it with us.

I see that bidder "w3jn" picked up some Very Interesting RACAL receivers,
Hmm, I wonder who that could be??

If it was from this estate, I use to see the owner at almost all the hamfests I attended and he was always dragging stuff back to his shop.
Here's another picture of what he had in Collins. I think he also cornered the market on Atlas 210/215 transceivers. In one picture, I saw at least 12 of them.

Was this a business for him where he bought, fixed up and sold the rigs at a profit.... or was he more of a hoarder, just buying the stuff cuz he loved it so much?

He must have been one heck of a good technician to have three workstations and the confidence to take in all that gear without any idea if it was working or not.  He was precise and into detail, orderly;  as shown how the rigs all lined up perfectly on the shelves. No JSer.  (maybe add some carpet on the shelving... ;))

More power to him - he did what he loved to do.  He lived his life how he wanted to. He surrounded himself with what made him happy.  That is my definition of success.  It would have been fun to visit him and his stash when he was alive.

I don't think this was any of Hal's stuff.  Absolute Auctions ran thru 5 or 6 auctions, 200 lots each, each lot had up to 10 radios, of Hal's stuff last year.  I got some stuff out of those auctions and most was non-working, although most of it easily repaired (broken fuse holders, missing rectifier toobs).  I am still duking it out with a MicroTel PR-700 and the dozens of tantalum caps that short out.

This stuff seemed cleaner, some had manuals and power cables and none of Hal's stuff had those.  The first couple of auctions of Hal's, stuff went really cheap then picked up steam as the eBay pickers started circling.  Few, if any, bargains in this one.

Nick, yep that's me that scored the Racal 6840 twins and the Cubic.  I've had a bunch of those Cubics over the years and like them very much; first time for me for the RA6840.  I was very interested in that LTV 51S-1 but not at that price.

JN, roger on the LTV. Pretty though... I looked (in person) at a few of those MicroTech units
in the earlier auctions. Didn't think I could find the schematic though, and knew nothing about
them. Thought the 'scope "made the rig". If you get it to run, I'd really like to see it, pics, or a
vid would be better...

JJ, as just mentioned, not looking like HAL stuff.

But judging by the HAL pictures posted above, only a small part of what he actually
had made it to the auctions!

The one guy "ibidhigh" apparently is fairly local to the auction house, not a ham,
and in the original auctions bought a huge amount of more or less random stuff,
like a vacuum cleaner. Bulk quantities of Heath. I figured out that he is an epay flipper,
as I bothered to look for that Harris solid state amplifier later on epay. There it was at $1,000 asking price
(without the PS)! It later sold for about $400, iirc.

Most things on this auction went stupid high... dominated by 2-3 who apparently wanted
this stuff regardless. Doubt that they will be able to make anything much in terms of profits.

There was the B&W 6100(?) 5100(?) the synthesized rig, listed as a linear amp, in seemingly
clean condition.

I've been following these auctions since the first of the Landair stuff went up for auction. What baffles me is how the auction company bundles stuff together. Whoever at the auction company that does this is pretty clueless about boat anchors because you will see things like a piece of gear in one batch of radios to be auctioned and then the matching power supply or some other vital accessories in a completely different batch to be auctioned. I think if they got someone in to better match stuff up that they could get even higher prices.

I don't think they're completely clueless but more business savvy. They're not there to make you happy but to drive the number of bids up and to drive the bid prices up. Many times interested parties in an auction may only be interested in a specific piece, i.e. the transceiver, or just the power supply/speaker or the matching microphone. They don't need or want to be stuck with additional pieces that they had to pay for and really don't need. Separating "matching" pieces into separate auctions may seem clueless but its good business sense if you're looking to get the best bang for the dollar. Interested parties know how to bid in multiple auctions.
Auctions aren't a "let's make a deal" type of environment.

Auto scrap yards make money the same way. Buy car for $100, sell one door for $200.

Having been there and spoken to them at some length, they are without any knowledge whatsoever about things ham radio or electronic.
More or less random groupings is what they did... sometimes they put stuff together that looked the same.
But mostly because it came out of the truck together, not for any other reason.

They don't care one way or the other.
Move the stuff out, that's the extent of it.

I won some very nice stuff at this last auction. This was (according to staff I know at AAR Auctions) NOT a "Hal" auction. The seller is the owner of a "private collection located on Long Island". Next time I'm there (I buy non radio items from them too) maybe a box of chocolates for a certain gal in the office or a bottle of good booze to one of the gallery crew will help reveal the identity of the seller.

There have been a number of avid radio collectors located out on Long Island.
Obviously the auction is over so it probably doesn't really matter where the stuff came from.
